Since starting out in early 2013, country artist Kacey Musgraves has released five studio albums, four demo albums, two extended plays, as well as 13 singles.

She has quickly become a sensation for both the pop and country community. She has a total of six Grammy Awards, seven Country Music Association Awards, and three Academy of Country Music Awards.

Kacey Musgraves has toured with Katy Perry, Willie Nelson, and Harry Styles and has even created a Christmas cover with Lana Del Rey. Musgraves has become a symbol for contemporary country music. She is known for her lyrics and work in LGBTQ inclusion and acceptance, as well as recreational marijuana use awareness.

Musgraves is known for her sound that leans toward traditional ’90s country music elements. It’s twangy, has sparse arrangements, and still manages to lean toward that pop image artists gravitated toward.

Kacey Musgraves Releases ‘Same Trailer Different Park’ 8 Years Ago

On March 19, 2013, exactly eight years ago today, Musgraves released her first major-label, full-length debut album titled “Same Trailer Different Park.”

She co-produced the album with Luke Laird and Shane McAnally. The album hit No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart. She released four of the songs as singles, all of which landed in the Top 40 as well.

The album combines her talent for wordplay, activism, meaning, and overall interesting Texas-pop-driven noise. She followed the album up with “Pageant Material” in 2015.

It also won Best Country Album in 2014 at the Grammys and Album of the Year at ACM Awards. “Merry Go ‘Round” won Best Country Song at the Grammys in 2014 as well.

“The making of this record was such a fun and meaningful time for me. As a writer, singer and producer I learned so much throughout the whole process. I am proud and excited to present a project … that came from a very real and inspired place in my brain and heart,” Kacey Musgraves said at the time, according to The Boot.

The Impact of Musgraves’ Album

Her first album showcases her talent as both a singer as well as a songwriter. The clever lyrics in songs like “Merry Go ‘Round” and “Step Off” continue to stand out.

One of the songs that garnered attention on the album was “Follow Your Arrow.”

“So, make lots of noise / Kiss lots of boys / Or kiss lots of girls / If that’s something you’re into / When the straight and narrow / Gets a little too straight / Roll up a joint, or don’t.”

“A label’s typical plan would be to put something out that’s safer and get fans, and then push buttons, but my idea is to push buttons first, scare off the people who are gonna be scared off, and then the right people will like you for who you really are, and stay with you,” Kacey Musgraves told The New York Times.

Kacey Musgraves exists at the interesting intersection between more traditional fanbases and the ever-evolving contemporary sound of country music. She’s a huge fan of Dolly Parton herself, but also spends time with people like Reese Witherspoon, Willie Nelson, and Gigi Hadid.

Speaking about Parton, Musgraves told Billboard: “Beauty, sex appeal, brains, wit, humor, beautiful songwriting, meaningful songwriting, no apologies for who she is, LGBTQ advocate long before it was even a thing or trendy or whatever… She’s fearless and I admire her spirit a lot and she’s very kind. She’s very present when you’re talking to her and I just really love her so much.”
