Randy Travis Reissuing Debut Album ‘Storms of Life’ With Three New Songs for 35th Anniversary

by Jim Casey

Randy Travis will celebrate the 35th anniversary of his 1986 debut album, Storms of Life, by releasing a remastered deluxe edition on Sept. 27. The new record will feature remastered versions of the album’s 10 tracks, as well as three previously unreleased songs from label archives.

Randy’s debut album, which was released on June 2, 1986, helped country music return to its traditional-sounding roots, away from the poppy Urban Cowboy movement that dominated the early 1980s. Storms of Life featured a couple of Randy’s most popular No. 1 singles, “On the Other Hand” and “Diggin’ Up Bones.” The album also included two additional Top 10 hits, “1982” and “No Place Like Home.”

“It was music I believed in, that told a story I wanted to share,” said Randy via email to The Tennessean. “We were fortunate to have a large catalog of songs to choose from that were more traditional. At the time, people and radio really weren’t playing this kind of music. Most people were recording more of an Urban Cowboy sound. So I got to choose from the best of the best, cream of the crop. It was exciting for all of us to get back to our roots.”

A Star Is Born

With a one-of-a-kind baritone, Randy’s debut album helped solidify the North Carolina native as a force in country music for years to come. It also helped the future Hall of Fame member pack his trophy case. Randy Travis won the CMA Horizon Award (new artist) at the 1986 CMA Awards. In addition, he copped Album, Single, and Top Male Vocalist of the Year at the ACM Awards in 1987.

Less than a year after its release, the RIAA certified the album Platinum for sales of 1 million units in February 1987. The album was later certified 3X Platinum for sales of 3 million units.

During his career, Randy scored more than a dozen No. 1 hits. He also won six Grammy Awards, five CMA Awards, and 10 ACM Awards. Randy, who suffered a near-fatal stroke in 2013, was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016.

Deluxe Storm

Storms of Life (35th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) will be released on Sept. 27 via Warner Music Nashville. The album will be available for pre-order on Aug. 27. The three previously unreleased tracks include “Ain’t No Use,” “Carryin’ Fire,” and “The Wall.”

“It’s been 35 years, and to this day I still hear things like, ‘This album made me move to Nashville,’ or ‘This record made me love country music,'” added Randy Travis via The Tennessean. “Just the other day a woman told me she bought three Storms of Life albums because she wore the first two out.”
