Country superstar Reba McEntire is a soulful person.

The singer has released one gospel album, Sing It Now: Songs of Faith & Hope. (The album won a Grammy Award.) And McEntire said her relationship with religion is “special, very sweet.”

“You know some religions are – you got to pray three times a day. Oh, I knock that off before I get out of bed,” McEntire told CBS News in 2018.

Reba McEntire Prays, A Lot

McEntire’s fans may wonder what she prays about. After all, she’s already a huge success. What more could she want in life? But it turns out McEntire’s prayers are mostly of gratitude.

“Oh, thanking for a good night’s sleep and the good bed and I love this pillow,” McEntire said by way of explaining her prayers. “Thank you for this house you are letting me live in. Oh my gosh, I love it… I don’t preach. I try to live by example. I’m not perfect. I’m a little renegade a lot of times. I love to have a drink of whiskey. But I’m a good person and I try never to hurt anybody’s feelings.”

She views her singing talent, and perhaps thus her music career, as a God-given gift.

“My gift from God was singing and daddy would say, ‘Get back in there and practice your singing,’” McEntire recalled. “And I was like, ‘How do you practice singing?’ I just would sing. It just came out naturally.”

McEntire Says Gospel Songs Moved Her

While McEntire approached her gospel album the same way she approaches her country albums, she said there was one key difference about the gospel album. Doug Sizemore, her co-producer, told McEntire that she sounded different on the gospel album.

“I would sing the songs different,” McEntire told the Christian Post. “I guess because they touched my heart so much that I was moved to the core of my soul with the songs.”

And McEntire lives her life mindful of God’s role in the world around her. For example, one day she got in her car and was driving around, and suddenly she turned the corner and saw “the most beautiful rainbow.” McEntire said she thanked God for letting her see it.

“I can’t imagine living a life without God in my life,” she told the Christian Post. “He is my best friend, He’s my buddy, He’s the one that I talk to when there’s no one around. I talk to Him when people are around a lot too. He’s my confidant, He’s my advisor, He’s my director. I just don’t know why you wouldn’t want that in your life. He’s just like a bodyguard, He is your protector.”

Little known fact: McEntire’s younger sister sings gospel music. And she’s recorded several albums, too. So fans who liked McEntire’s gospel album have somewhere else to turn for more.
