Reba McEntire’s halftime performance at Dallas Cowboys’ Thanksgiving game in 1997 rocked the crowd. More importantly, the singer used the platform to emphasize the importance of The Salvation Army’s annual holiday fundraising initiative.

Taking to the stage at mid-field, McEntire performed “Until They Don’t Love You” alongside a choir, dancers and the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. “Somehow it’s all up to us, gotta take this world. Make it a world of love, gotta do it now,” she sings. “Gotta find a way to make a change somehow. There’s gotta be a way for us to make it better.”

Following her performance, McEntire exited the stage and proceeded to join representatives of The Salvation Army. Together, they officially begin the organization’s kettle drive.

“In the 106 years of The Salvation Army, this is the first national kettle kickoff,” an announcer at the event said. Also on hand for the kickoff were three survivors of the Oklahoma City bombing, which took place in 1995. During the event, McEntire greets the survivors as the announcer reminds those in the stadium and watching “that compassion is not a spectator sport; everyone has to play.”

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Salvation Army says the need for donations is greater than ever before. As such, the organization reports they expect a 155 percent increase in the number of people it will serve this holiday season.
