Country music star Sam Hunt plead guilty to the DUI charges against him from 2019 in Nashville.

The “Body Like a Back Road” singer appeared at the Davidson County Circuit Court on Wednesday, August 18, where he proceeded to plead guilty to two misdemeanors DUI charges.

Sam Hunt Pleads Guilty

According to the Tennessean, Hunt was then sentenced to 11 months and 29 days in jail. All the time was suspended except for 48 hours. Hunt will serve time at the DUI Education Centers. Here he will complete an alcohol safety course.

In the process of all this, Sam Hunt is losing his license for an entire year and will need to have an interlock system put into his car when it gets reinstated.

Hunt would have been facing even more time if he had gone to trial for the crimes. He would be looking at closer to two years in prison.

Sam Hunt was arrested back on November 21, 2019. The Davidson County grand jury had indicted Hunt in December for first-offense DUI, an additional DUI charge, as well as an open container violation.

That open container charge was dropped during his plea deal, which is why the singer only pleads guilty to two charges against him. According to CNN, Hunt was driving the wrong way on the street when police spotted him. He immediately admitted to drinking. His blood-alcohol level was more than two times over the legal limit at the time of the arrest.

Hunt Responds to Incident

Fans were quick to criticize the artist for his dangerous actions. Hunt then took to social media at the time to write, “It was a poor and selfish decision. And I apologize to everyone who was unknowingly put at risk and let down by it. It won’t happen again.”

He also opened up about the arrest during a 2020 HITS Daily Double interview. Hunt talked about his connection to alcohol and exactly what went down that night.

“Moderation is important. I’ve never wanted to glorify it. It’s a cheap trick in country music, and I’ve always wanted to avoid that. I don’t like using [drinking] as a party song; for me, that wouldn’t be honest. I’ve never been the guy who shotguns a beer. I know people who partake that way, and I wouldn’t want to shake my finger or look down on them … I put myself in a position by being out, seeing friends at a show, leaving my phone in an Uber. We’d Uber’d all night, then went back to a friend’s house, had some pizza. I fell asleep on the couch, woke up groggy. I should’ve been more conscious, but I wasn’t. So I take responsibility,” Hunt said.

Amidst this all, Sam Hunt recently released a brand new single with Ingrid Andress called “Wishful Drinking.” It joins his other collection of new music, “Southside,” which came out in 2020.
