Singer-Songwriter Aaron Lewis Takes Major Shot at Bruce Springsteen in Patriotic New Single

In Aaron Lewis’ new single, he asks listeners “Am I the Only One” unhappy with the current condition of the country. While most patriotic tunes are fairly upbeat, Lewis’ lyrics are surprisingly solemn.

The hit single focuses on Lewis’ perspective of the protests of the American flag and famous monuments. In a low and slow manner that takes us back to “So Far Away” days, the country singer speaks from a place of raw emotion and perhaps a bit of desperation.

Aaron Lewis Dedicates Single to ‘All the Patriots’

Last Friday, the frontman for Staind, Aaron Lewis, released “Am I the Only One.”

In his Tweet announcing the song’s release, Lewis stated, “This one’s for all the patriots.”

Throughout the beginning of Lewis’s song, he not-so-rhetorically asks if he’s the only one that still feels pride for his country.

This ain’t the freedom we’ve been fightin’ for
It was somethin’ more, yeah, it was somethin’ more
Am I the only one, willin’ to fight
For my love of the red and white
And the blue, burnin’ on the ground
Another statue comin’ down in a town near you

Watchin’ the threads of Old Glory come undone

Even before the new release, Aaron Lewis wasn’t shy about how he felt towards protesting the National Anthem and American flag on Twitter.

On June 14th, Flag Day, Lewis posted a photo of his tour bus with two flags flying in the foreground. One was the American flag and the other was one that read, “Don’t blame us. We voted Trump.”

The American flag had the proper spotlight at the bottom of the pole. Though not a commonly practiced tradition anymore, flag owners are supposed to shine a spotlight on any American flag that flies through the night instead of being lowered as a sign of respect.

In Lewis’ caption, he wrote, “Now more than ever, don’t forget what the flag stands for, and what our heroes have done to defend it. #flagday #patriots #dontkneel“.

Country Star Disses Former Rock Star

Perhaps it was Flag Day that inspired Aaron Lewis’ newest release. Or, maybe the controversy surrounding the Olympic athlete, Gwen Berry, inspired the country star to create the song. Whatever his inspiration was, Lewis included his feelings towards the recent protests with his line that referred to rockstar, Bruce Springsteen. In “Am I the Only One,” Aaron Lewis sings:

Am I the only one, quit singin’ along
Every time they play a Springsteen song

Despite the upbeat energy of Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.,” the song was actually a criticism to the country. It seems Lewis channels his energy for recent protesters with his lyrics that call out the rockstar’s famous song.

Whether or not you agree with what Lewis includes in his newest release, there’s no doubt that what he says is his authentic reaction. And to release a song with that kind of naked emotion, no matter the perspective, takes courage.
