Sturgill Simpson is one of those artists who makes a little something for everyone. At the same time, he makes music for himself. You can see that both of these things are true by looking at the differences in his albums. His first few albums including HIgh Top Mountain were fairly straightforward country music releases. Then, with Sound and Fury, Simpson shifted gears to a sound that could be called psychedelic southern rock. Another shift came with his Cuttin’ Grass albums which saw him covering his own songs with an all-star bluegrass group.
The one thing that has never changed is his deep love and respect for the legendary singer-songwriter John Prine. For many, Prine is one of the greatest songwriters of the modern era. Sturgill Simpson is one of many that counts him as a hero and an inspiration. However, unlike many others, Simpson was able to call the late legend a friend.
Sturgill Simpson met John Prine early in his career. The two became fast friends. After Prine’s passing in 2020, Simpson was infuriated when the CMA Awards snubbed the fallen legend. This passion for Prine’s work makes Sturgill an ideal candidate to participate in a tribute to his mentor and friend.
Today, Oh Boy Records released the second single from the upcoming Broken Hearts and Dirty Windows Vol. 2, a tribute to John Prine. That single is Sturgill Simpson’s cover of Prine’s 1971 single “Paradise” and it is awesome. Listen to it below. When you’re done, read more about the upcoming album.
Sturgill Simpson and Several Others Contribute to John Prine Tribute Album
Unfortunately, we don’t have a full tracklist or artist roster for the album just yet. However, if the first two singles are anything to go off of, this is going to be an amazing collection of songs. The first single from the release was Brandi Carlile’s cover of “I Remember Everything.” So, at the very least, we know that Sturgill Simpson and Brandi Carlile are on the album. That’s a damned fine start.
The official Oh Boy Records website says that many of the artists involved were dear friends of John Prine.
The first volume of Broken Hearts and Dirty Windows, which dropped way back in 2010 had an eclectic mix of artists. The Avett Brothers, Old Crow Medicine Show, My Morning Jacket, and Justin Townes Earle were featured among many others. So, that could mean that the upcoming release will feature artists from a wide range of genres and eras.
Broken Hearts and Dirty Windows Vol. 2 drops October 8. Preorders are open now.
