‘The Voice’ Star Blake Shelton Thinks He Was a ‘Lazy Deadbeat’ During Wedding Planning with Gwen Stefani

The Voice coach Blake Shelton thinks he proved critics right by being a “deadbeat” wedding planner.

When Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani were newly engaged and dreaming about their summer 2021 wedding, Blake wanted his blushing bride to have the perfect day. So he left all the planning up to her. And he shared that sentiment during an interview.

“We’re letting Gwen do whatever she wants for the wedding,” he said.

But for some reason, another journalist mistook Blake’s words and wrote, “Well, oh, look, he’s already a lazy deadbeat husband.”

And while chatting on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, he admitted that he was. At least when it came to wedding planning, that is.

“What do I know about that stuff?” he said when asked about the nuptials. “Of course it was her and her vision. And all I had to do was drink and kiss Gwen Stefani, I mean, my God. the greatest gig I’ve ever had.”

In the end, Gwen put together a gorgeous wedding. The couple said “I do” at Blake Shelton’s Oklahoma ranch, with fewer than 20 people in attendance. And the couple made the ceremony extra special by penning their own vows.

“That’s exactly what [the wedding] needed to be,” Shelton said.

‘The Voice’ Star Blake Shelton Wrote A Special Song For His Wedding Day

Gwen Stefani may have done all the work while planning her July 2021 wedding. But her handsome groom added some romance with a new song.

When Gwen Stefani promised herself to Blake Shelton, he gave her a special gift—a song called We Can Reach the Stars. The tear-jerking tune includes heartfelt lyrics that promise a perfect life as husband and wife.

And the gesture was particularly special for Blake’s bride. Because oddly enough, the career singer-songwriter actually hates writing songs.

“For me, writing songs is like going to the dentist sometimes,” Blake admitted to PEOPLE. “So the fact that I did that, I think it was a complete shock to her.”

Blake Shelton paired up with his friend Craig Wiseman to get the song on paper. The Voice coach battled with writer’s block during the early stage of the writing process. But one day, Wiseman started strumming the perfect melody on his guitar and the inspiration began to flow.

“He was coming up with some of the most important stuff,” Shelton said. “Which was unbelievable for me to hear. I was like, ‘Man, wait till I get there so we can talk about it.’ But at the same time, I didn’t want him to stop.”

Blake couldn’t be happier with the final cut of We Can Reach the Stars. And he credits a little divine intervention for the final product.

“Everything happened exactly how it was meant to happen,” he continued. “It just like, ‘Wow, we did it. I have a song about my wife.’ It was so exciting to me.”
