If you are a Tim McGraw fan, then there’s no doubt that you are going to love hearing the story behind his 2016 hit song, “Humble and Kind.”
For those who don’t know, the song was written by country and folk singer Lori McKenna. However, it was first released by McGraw as part of his 14 studio album, Damn Country Music. The song went on to receive several awards and nominations including winning Best Country Song of the year at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards, Video of the Year at the 2016 CMT Music Awards, Song of the Year at the 2016 CMA Awards, and Country Song of the Year at the 2016 American Music Awards. It has been certified platinum.
“Lori McKenna wrote this song by herself,” McGraw explained in a recent TikTok video. “She was writing it sort of as a love letter to her kids. If you know much about Lori — a lot of my fans know Lori — just an incredible songwriter and incredible person.”
McGraw then dives into how McKenna first got in touch with him.
“I get an email from Lori. She said, ‘I just wrote it this afternoon. It’s just me and a guitar and I just recorded it real quick on my computer. Tell me what you think of it.'”
McGraw said that he and his wife, fellow country star Faith Hill, both shed tears listening to it.
“Well, I played the song for Faith and I and we were just sobbing in tears when we heard it. And it was just Lori and a guitar.”
Tim McGraw Records ‘Humble and Kind’ A Year Later
It took about a year after first hearing McKenna’s song until Tim McGraw finally decided to record it. And his answer to why he waited so long will melt your heart.
“It was about a year later before I recorded it. And I had it and I was recording songs and it was the last thing I recorded for that album. Because, to be honest, I didn’t want to mess it up.”
He continued saying, “We were on vacation, and one night I told Faith that I was going to stay up for a little while. I put my headphones on and I probably listened to the song 100 times and took copious notes. I finally came up with sort of an idea of how to record it and this was the result. It’s one of my favorite records I’ve ever made.”
It’s clear that his fans appreciate the work. One person left a reply on Twitter saying, “Everything about this song is perfect and beautiful. This song has touched people in so many ways.”
