Country music star Travis Tritt is speaking out about where his musical influence originates from. And it may not be where you thought.
Tritt himself took to social media on Wednesday night to share a personal anecdote with his many fans and followers. The country music singer says that of all the people he takes inspiration from, there is one who is by far the most responsible.
That one person would be none other than the soul music legend Ray Charles. Charles actually grew up listening to country music. Tritt idolized Charles after becoming aware of “how much soul that Ray Charles brought into the country world.” He said that it “opened up a whole new world” for him.
Now that we think about Tritt’s personal style, it does start to make sense.
Meanwhile, Tritt sent a message to his fans and followers on Twitter on Wednesday letting them know who his idol is. And he doesn’t want anyone to call his Ray Charles influence cultural appropriation.
“I’ve publicly said many times that Ray Charles is more responsible for every note that comes out of my mouth when I sing than anyone else,” Tritt wrote. “Does that make me guilty of cultural appropriation? No! It makes me guilty of being strongly influenced by someone I deeply admired.”
Tritt was able to live out one of his dreams a little over 18 years ago. He was paired up with Charles on a new episode of CMT Crossroads. Together, the two stars sang “Georgia On My Mind,” It’s A Great Day To Be Alive,” and “I’m Moving On.”
“What an amazing experience,” Tritt wrote on Facebook following the performance. “One I will never forget!”
