Trisha Yearwood already was a Cher super fan. On Monday, the country singer applauded Cher for helping rescue Kaavan, the “world’s loneliest elephant” to a new home.

Tagging Cher in her post, Yearwood tweeted:

“So excited this day has finally come! I know how hard you’ve worked for Kaavan. Sending you guys all the good vibes for your journey!”

Why Do Cher, Trisha Yearwood Care So Much About An Elephant?

Now, for the backstory, and why two singers care so much about an elephant who had been living in a zoo in Pakistan. Kaavan reached his new home in Cambodia. He’ll live in a wildlife sanctuary.

Cher is making a documentary about Kaavan. The Sri Lankan government gave the then baby elephant to the Islamabad zoo in 1985. Kaavan lived with his partner Salehi for many years. But Salehi died in 2012.

To make matters worse, the zoo fell on hard times, endangering the welfare of all the animals. A Pakistani court ordered the zoo closed in August. Vets said Kaavan was both overweight and malnourished. Plus, he was lonely. Elephants are social creatures and can make life-long bonds.

Cher worked on Kaavan’s release for the past two years. She arrived in Pakistan on Friday to help with Kaavan’s transport.

Cher has an animal welfare called “Free the Wild.” It worked with Four Paws, another animal welfare group, and the American syndicated columnist and philanthropist, Eric Margolis, to relocate Kaavan — a mission that’s cost about $400,000.

Dr. Amir Khalil, a veterinarian with Four Paws, told the Associated Press that Kaavan suffered from many ailments. But, he no longer will be lonely.

“In the sanctuary in Cambodia … waiting for him is three ladies, three Asian female elephants,” Khalil said. “Now Kaavan might have a new partner, and share a new life with a partner.”
