Carrie Underwood honored her hero, Alan Jackson, during a Grand Ole Opry performance back in 2012.

It’s always fun to hear about which artists inspired another to chase their country music dreams. For Carrie Underwood, that artist is Alan Jackson. Before her performance at the Grand Ole Opry in 2012, Underwood shared with the audience that Jackson inspired her to become a country singer-songwriter. He’s also the first performer she ever saw in concert. In his honor, Underwood performed Jackson’s number one hit from 2003, “Remember When.”

Did Alan Jackson Write ‘Remember When’ About His Own Marriage?

Jackson released”Remember When” in 2003 for his album, Greatest Hits Volume II. When it comes to love there is no such thing as “good” or “bad.” A relationship is all of it all the time. There are ups and downs, highs and lows, and Alan Jackson sings about all of them. During the song, he sings, “Remember when old ones died and new were born. And life was changed, disassembled, rearranged. We came together, fell apart, and broke each other’s hearts. Remember when…We brought back the love, we found trust, vowed we’d never give it up. Remember when.”

The song spent 25 weeks on the chart and peaked in the number one spot. Billboard called the song, “the most poignant, well-written country song to hit the format in a long time.” The song was certified Gold in January 2005 and has sold 1,571,000 copies in the United States.

The song was written solely by Alan Jackson. It’s a reflection on his own marriage to his wife, Denise. The two have been married since they were teenagers. However, the marriage has not been without its trials. In fact, the two reportedly almost divorced in 1998. Instead, the two separated for three months then started dating again slowly while going to couples therapy. Since then, the two have been able to find happiness again.

“God took our mess and made something wonderful out of it. It took us going through that to finally have the kind of relationship we both always wanted,” Denise said.
