Johnny Cash was a rare talent. Before his death in 2003, he had the distinction of being inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, Gospel Hall of Fame, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He is one of the best-selling and most recognizable recording artists of all time.

The Man in Black’s sound is almost instantly identifiable. His deep bass-baritone voice and somber tone make him stand out among a sea of voices. An up and coming artist from North Carolina has a voice and talent that are reminiscent of Cash.

Andrew Hensley – Johnny Cash Reincarnated?

When you think of a voice that sounds like Johnny Cash, you probably picture a large, grizzled, older man. You’d be safe to assume that years of cigarettes, whiskey, and hard living went into shaping that voice. So, when you hear that voice coming out of a fresh-faced kid from North Carolina, it’s a little shocking.

In the spring of 2019, a video started making the rounds of that very thing. In the video titled “I have found the next Johnny Cash!” a young Hensley is playing and singing a cover of Cash’s “Walk the Line,” and his voice is a dead ringer for Johnny Cash.

Lately, his videos started circulating again, and people are taking notice.

Hensley’s Other Covers

If you thought that Andrew Hensley just covered a single Johnny Cash tune and call it quits, you’d be wrong. He has several covers on his YouTube channel. There are a few Cash tunes including “Ring of Fire,” “I Don’t Know Where I’m Bound,” and of course, “I Walk the Line.”

His other covers include older songs such as “Wildwood Flower” and “Red River Valley. It’s important to keep in mind that he isn’t just a Johnny Cash impersonator. His singing voice is just deep and powerful.

If you’re feeling a little festive, Hensley recently released a cover of “Blue Christmas” that you have to hear.

Like Johnny Cash, Hensley Is a Songwriter

The young musician doesn’t just sound like Johnny Cash and perform great covers. He also writes and sings his own original songs. Like his voice, his songs aren’t exactly what you would expect to hear from a teenage boy.

There is a sorrowful worldliness about his lyrics that seem beyond his years. If you didn’t know they were original compositions, you’d be forgiven for assuming that they were covers of old country songs that you somehow missed along the way.

One thing is for sure: this young man is blazing his own trail in music. We can only hope that his talent continues to develop, and there is an album in the future.
