Certainly, Kelly Clarkson has a powerhouse voice. And although none of us could ever forget that fact, Clarkson frequently reminds us during her “Kellyoke” segment of “The Kelly Clarkson Show.” During the segment, Clarkson chooses popular songs to cover. She’s pretty much covered every genre and her renditions of songs never disappoint. Most recently she covered country music legend Alan Jackson’s classic, “She’s Got the Rhythm (I Got the Blues).”

In a way the song really is an anthem for anyone who’s ever been left feeling unappreciated by an ex-partner. But it’s told from an interesting perspective. During the song, Alan Jackson is actually the unappreciative ex-partner. Jackson is sitting at the bar when his ex-lover shows up. But she’s not alone. Tonight she’s dancing with a new love interest. And Jackson has to watch as his past love dances with somebody else. Jackson sings, “And she’s got the rhythm and I got the blues. And she’s showing me how much I had to lose. With her every little move she’s telling me I’m over you. She’s got the rhythm and I got the blues.”

During her show, Kelly Clarkson performed a bluesy version of Alan Jackson’s song. And it’s everything we could have ever wanted in a cover song.

What’s the Story Behind Alan Jackson’s Song?

So is Alan Jackson’s “She’s Got the Rhythm (And I Got the Blues)” based on a real-life relationship? The short answer is, we don’t know. There’s not a lot of information on the origins of the song. But here’s what we do know. The song was co-written by Alan Jackson and country star Randy Travis.

Although Jackson has been married since shortly after high school, he and his wife did have their fair share of ups and downs. Randy Travis also went through a divorce after 19 years of marriage with his first wife. However, he married Mary Travis on March 21, 2015 and the two have been together since then. Regardless of whether or not the song is based on a real-life connection, it certainly hits on universal human experiences. Who hasn’t fantasized about making an ex jealous by showing up with a new partner? And who hasn’t felt regret and jealously after seeing an ex show up with a new partner? Jackson and Travis certainly knew what they were doing when they wrote “She’s Got the Rhythm (And I Got the Blues).” And audiences responded well. The song spent 20 weeks on Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs chart and peaked in the number one spot.

And, clearly, from Kelly Clarkson‘s rendition, the song is still popular today.
