Tim McGraw performed his holiday song “It Wasn’t His Child” on Monday night during the CMA Country Christmas. Before the performance, he gave insight into his decision to choose the song.

“Performing ‘It Wasn’t His Child’ was written by Skip Ewing who I’m a huge fan of,” he said. “I’ve known this since gosh, the late ’80s. I performed it several times at Christmas. It’s one of my go-to Christmas songs to perform. I always loved it. I love the message and the story behind it. It’s so well-written. Skip is a great writer.”

The Country Music Association filmed the 11th annual Christmas show this past September without a live audience. The show featured performances from Kelsea Ballerini, Dan + Shay, Gabby Barrett, Lady A, Little Big Town, Florida Georgia Line, Thomas Rhett, and Darius Rucker with Lindsey Stirling. Everyone’s favorite country music couple, Thomas Rhett and Lauren Akins, hosted the show.

In addition, Tim McGraw gave viewers a look into how he and his family like to spend the holidays. The family continues a unique holiday tradition that McGraw’s had since he was a child.

“Things are a little different around our house during the holidays when the girls have grown up,” he shared. “We have one girl left but she’s leaving before Christmas. They’ll all be back around Christmas time. They always like to come home and stay at the house. We do the big tree. Our family tradition for years has been to eat pasta, spaghetti and meatballs on Christmas Eve. That has been sort of my job as a dad to prepare the spaghetti and meatballs. That’s going to be a tradition I’ve had since I was a child. I hope it carries on.”
