On Sunday night, country legend Willie Nelson and his sister, Bobbie Lee Nelson, performed “Beautiful Texas” as part of a virtual benefit concert for the state of Texas.
The We’re Texas benefit concert raised money to help those affected by the recent winter storms in the state. The virtual event was put together by beloved Texan and actor Matthew McConaughey and his wife, Camila Alves. The benefit featured a huge lineup of musicians and celebrities from Texas or that live in the state. Who better to play a song for their home state than the icon that is Willie Nelson himself?
Nelson’s roots are well-known when it comes to promoting his Texan upbringing. The outline of Texas is prominently featured on his merchandise and on some of his records. Additionally, Nelson has written numerous songs based on his home state. The Nelson siblings chose to play a very appropriately titled song for the virtual benefit. They performed “Beautiful Texas,” a track from his seventh studio album – 1968’s Texas in My Soul.
Willie and Bobbie Nelson played an intimate version of the song from inside a recording studio. His older sister played piano, while the country icon strummed his acoustic guitar and sang. It was the perfect tribute to their home state of Texas.
The We’re Texas event lasted more than two hours. But you can fast forward to the 24:50 mark to see Willie Nelson and his sister’s touching performance.
Willie Nelson Only One of Many Stars Who Made ‘We’re Texas’ Benefit Appearance
Willie Nelson and his sister’s performance was a highlight of the We’re Texas fundraiser. However, tons of celebrities made an appearance last night during the event.
The benefit concert included performances by Texas natives Clint Black, Gary Clark Jr., George Strait, and Kacey Musgraves. In addition, artists Kelly Clarkson, Kirk Franklin, Leon Bridges, Don Henley, Lyle Lovett, Miranda Lambert, Post Malone, and more performed.
Furthermore, the event included a bevy of special celebrity appearances. Texas sports heroes like Clayton Kershaw, Colt McCoy, Dak Prescott, Jordan Spieth, and Troy Aikman showed up for the fundraiser. Television and movie stars also made appearances. They included Angie Harmon, Dr. Phil, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Joe Rogan, Renee Zellweger, Woody Harrelson, and many more.
The collection of famous musicians, sports stars, and celebrities helped raise more than $200,000 for Texas relief efforts. The Just Keep Livin’ Foundation’s Texas Relief Fund will distribute the benefit’s proceeds to various non-profit organizations. They include the Austin Disaster Relief Network, Meals on Wheels, the Salvation Army of Texas, Save the Children, and others.
As McConaughey and his wife planned, the fundraiser will help thousands of Texans in need. The historic winter storm knocked out power to millions of homes. It also busted water pipes and many Texans are still without clean water. Hopefully the We’re Texas proceeds will make a difference in many people’s lives.
