Widow of Loretta Lynn’s Ranch Foreman Who Passed Away in Floodwaters Recounts Final Moments

by Taylor Cunningham

In an interview with Daily Mail, Louise Spears opened up about her husband’s final moments. Her husband, Wayne Spears, was Loretta Lynn’s ranch foreman who lost his life when Tennessee experienced devastating floods.

The 70-year old wasn’t scheduled to work the day the storms hit Humphreys County, but he wanted to check on the ranch anyway.

Louise said he woke up early and headed to Loretta Lynn’s ranch. He came back for breakfast and told his wife, “You’re not going to believe this, all this rain we’ve had, there was no water out of the creek, nothing, everything is fine.”

After eating, he said he was going to go back and check on his tractor. “It was still raining out,” she said. ‘That’s when I remember him saying, ‘I’m going to go back again to see how things are up there, to check on the tractor.”’

Louise said he asked if she wanted to go with him, but she said, “no, it’s raining.” Then he kissed her and said, “I’ll be back in a little bit.”

Wayne Spears died later that day after he was caught in rushing waters. The storm also claimed the life of 19 more people, including 7-month-old twins in Waverly, TN.

Loretta Lynn posted her condolences to Wayne and his family shortly after her ranch announced his death.

The Loretta Lynn Ranch wrote that “Wayne has been a family friend to the Lynns and a fixture to the Ranch for decades and we are all devastated by his passing.”

“There are no words at the ranch today…only tears,” Lynn wrote on Facebook earlier this week. “Our ranch family is our family. We lost my amazing ranch foreman, Wayne in this devastating flood. He took such good care of things here on the ranch for us. He’s one of us and the whole Lynn family Is heartbroken. Please pray for his precious family and friends.”

Loretta Lynn Pens Heart-Wrenching Message on 37th Anniversary of Her Son’s Passing

On July 22nd, Loretta Lynn honored her late son in a heart-wrenching Facebook post.

Jack Benny Lynn passed away when he was only 34 years old. He was riding his horse around the family estate near Waverly, TN, and attempted to cross a river. He fell from the horse and drowned.

“My Jack. Today in 1984 my life changed forever. You are never the same after you bury one of your children-never,” she wrote.

“I’ve thought of him and missed him every day for 37 years. He was a spitting image of his daddy. He was my blond headed, blue-eyed baby. Just what I asked for,” she continued. “He was quiet and tender. I adored him with all my heart. He and Betty Sue got into everything when they were little and I was a new momma. They kept me on my toes and I’d do it all again if I could. They’re together now. Jack, I love you, honey. You still bring a smile to me every time I think of you.”

Loretta Lynn shares six children with Oliver Lynn, who passed in 1996.
