Willie Nelson Fighting for Protection of Wild Horses: ‘Symbols of American Freedom’

by Jonathan Howard

Wild horses, one of North America’s great beasts. Right now, Willie Nelson might be their biggest and loudest supporter and advocate. The country music singer is a universally beloved figure and his new mission is a noble one.

Nelson recently released an open letter to his fan base. In that letter, he advocates for the protection of wild horses by urging folks to contact their Congressional representatives. There isn’t much more country-western than wild horses and Willie.

The artist kept his message direct and passionate in the open letter. “Wild horses, like other wild animals, were meant to be wild and free. Historic family bands are broken as the horses are separated forever. Some are adopted or sold, and many thousands more end up living in crowded corrals or leased pastures, exposed to the elements. Some end up slaughtered for human consumption overseas.” He went on to refer to the wild horses as, “historic symbols of American freedom.”

Throughout his letter, Nelson made it clear the conflict he is talking about has to do with the Bureau of Land Management and other groups. Also, the country singer cites the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act from 50 years ago. However, there has been a change in recent years. So, Nelson is urging folks to ask their elected officials to help. That would happen with the passage of the SAFE Act, according to the artist.

This isn’t the first time Willie Nelson has advocated for animal rights. He is an avid horse owner with more than 70 rescues on his 700-acre ranch. So, this is a personal cause for the singer-songwriter.

Willie Nelson Takes the Stage at Farm Aid 2021

When Willie Nelson isn’t advocating for causes he believes in, he is playing music usually. He has played a number of shows over the last few months. There have been some great guests and moments along the way as well. Willie Nelson’s Outlaw Music Festival featured some of the best acts in the genre today.

One of the most iconic shows that Nelson has performed at over the years lets him do two things at once. Help a great cause and play some great music. Farm Aid 2021 featured a lot of awesome guests. That includes Nelson, Tyler Childers, Jamey Johnson, and more. Not only did the acts on stage put on an awesome show, but they were also able to help out family farmers and workers.

There has been a lot of focus on farmworkers in the last year. Not only do those jobs seem so important coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, but they have always been important. Luke Bryan had his own special concert series to celebrate farmers as well this year. However, Willie Nelson at Farm Aid is one of those things that cannot be replicated. It was a great event and hopefully, next year will be just as good.
