‘NCIS’ Fans Debate Gibbs’ Strong Immune System Based on His Habits

by Lauren Boisvert

NCIS agent and team leader Leroy Gibbs is known for his weird habits: his rules on the job; building a boat in his basement; and, as some Redditors have brought to light, drinking out of mugs and glasses that have had nails in them.

Reddit user sunnyD823 posted recently, “I can only imagine how much sawdust Gibbs has consumed over the years after casually blowing into his screw cups and pouring whiskey.” On NCIS, Gibbs has a habit of keeping screws and nails in mugs and glasses while working on his boat. When he needs a drink of whiskey, he emptys a glass, maybe blows the dust out of it, and pours.

Other users in the comments speculated that Gibbs may hang his cups upside down to reduce dust: “They wouldnt [sic] gather dust like that plus he frequently uses them anyway,” user youngclarky wrote. User green_girl15 replied, “Sometimes he does, but there’s also been several times that he’s just dumped out a cup of screws and nails, maybe or maybe not blew the dust out, and then poured a drink.”

Original poster sunnyD823 commented, “Must add fiber or something…”

‘NCIS’: Does Gibbs Have Good Ventilation in his Basement?

Boats aren’t meant to be built in basements. First of all, the obvious question: how are you going to get it out of there? Gibbs’ answer: you don’t, at least not usually. NCIS has stated before that Gibbs burns his finished boats. Though, hopefully, not in the basement, so they have to get out somehow. Second of all, sanding, priming, and painting were not meant to be done in such close quarters. Imagine all the sawdust flying around in that basement; it’s unclear if Gibbs has good ventilation. The occupational asthma from breathing that dust might do him in before anything at the NCIS has a chance to.

One Redditor brought up the point that Gibbs is a Marine veteran; they implied that he’s had all sorts of vaccines, booster shots, and physical training to keep him healthy. It’s a good theory; still doesn’t negate the fact that he’s building a boat in his basement and probably drinking a lot of metal shavings by accident.

Mark Harmon on Gibbs Leaving ‘NCIS’

According to Newsweek, Mark Harmon spoke about his ideas for Gibbs leaving the show in an interview in 2019, stating, “I’ve always thought if there’s ever a time where the writers are walking into the room and going ‘I don’t know what to do,’ then I think we all have to look at each other and call it a day.” He went on reassuringly, “But we’re not there yet.”

Currently, there have been some reports that Gibbs may be leaving the show, but NCIS showrunner Steven D. Binder told TV Line recently, “A lot of things are reported on this show that aren’t necessarily true.”

Harmon also commented on the commitment of the NCIS team and his admiration of the show, saying, “I know when this show ends that’s it—there won’t be anything else like this for me”. Hopefully, Gibbs has many more years and many more episodes of building boats–potentially unsafely–in his basement.
