NCIS fans recently discussed an “annoying” interaction between Vance and Gibbs. The show is going into its 19th season next month. It’s the top scripted drama in the world when it comes to viewers. That means there’s plenty of spaces on the internet where fans go to discuss the show.
In a recent Reddit thread titled “Why Was Vance Like This?” one user brought up the fact that they felt Vance was kind of a “jerk” in some episodes of NCIS.
“I happened to see the later seasons on TV and watched. Vance seemed to be a jerk snooping into every little thing Gibbs was doing. He reassigned his entire team and also was reading about Gibbs old Colombia mission. In season 18, he was nicer. He even supported Bishop when she was accused of the NSA leak. Did anyone else find him as somewhat of a jerk? Do you know why he was like this?”
Fans Were Quick to Defend Vance
NCIS Fans were very quick to point out that Vance sometimes has to be the “jerk.” He is the boss of the whole operation after all.
“You can’t blame Vance, after all he is the director of the agency so he has to put the agency first before anyone. When Gibbs or anyone does [something] outside or on the lines he needs to be super careful and make sure things don’t go too far bc he’s responsible for [maintaining] a good image for the agency and also has to answer to his superiors,” the fan wrote.
The fan who wrote the original post agreed.
“Gibbs does seem to take matters into his own hands too much lol,” they wrote.
No matter what you think of Vance, he does have a job to do. However, next season, that job won’t be supervising Gibbs as much. Agent Gibbs actor Mark Harmon is taking a very reduced role next year, only appearing in a few episodes.

NCIS has said goodbye to some truly cherished characters over the years, but none of those characters have been as essential to the core of the show as Special Agent Gibbs. Unfortunately, the ability of NCIS to survive without Agent Gibbs is going to be put to the test next year.
Mark Harmon, who has already taken a bit of a step back from the series, is taking it a bit farther. It’s even been rumored that Harmon wanted to leave the show entirely, but agreed to stay for another year to prevent the show from getting canceled by the network.
Even CBS higher-ups have admitted that Harmon’s time on the show is likely waning a bit, though they’d love to have him on.
“We take it year by year with Mark, we’d love to have him as long as he’d like to be here,” CBS President of Scripted Entertainment Kelly Kahl told Deadline. “Even in this past season, he might have been light in a couple of [episodes], so we’re happy to work around his schedule.”
