Former NCIS showrunner Gary Glasberg once explained how Mark Harmon was crucial to the creation of the spinoff show, NCIS: New Orleans. NCIS: New Orleans ran for seven seasons. During that time, Harmon served as an executive producer on the hit series.
“Every summer, I do some research about storylines for the coming season, and I sat down with Mark Harmon and I said, ‘Hey, I found out that there’s an office in New Orleans, and it used to be run by one guy, and it was a very tiny little office, and it was quirky and eccentric, against this great backdrop.” And he said, ‘Gary, that’s not a sweeps episode, that’s a spin-off.’ And we pitched it,” Glasberg explained.
NCIS: New Orleans starred Scott Bakula, C.C.H Pounder, Lucas Black, and Daryl Mitchell. CBS canceled the spinoff show earlier this year, and it came as a shock to the cast and crew.
One CBS Exec Explained why They Cancelled The Spinoff
In an interview with Deadline that took place earlier this year, CBS president of Scripted Entertainment Kelly Kahl talked about why they made the difficult choice to let the show go.
“Every year you evaluate what is making the strongest statement for your schedule and what gives you the best circulation. What will bring you the most numbers of viewers. You ask that question for pretty much every show every year. How can we make the schedule as strong as we can in the fall. That leads to some tough decisions,” Kahl explained.
“New Orleans was an excellent show for us. But sometimes shows hit the end of their cycle and we have to, in some cases, say goodbye.”
The NCIS: New Orleans cast had to say their goodbyes to each other under strict COVID-19 protocols during their final year. Thankfully, plenty of them have been able to land jobs after the show’s cancellation.
The cancellation of the spinoff, however, doesn’t mean other shows in the franchise are hurting. NCIS, for instance, is the top-rated scripted drama in the world.
The ‘NCIS’ Franchise is Still Going Strong
Just because New Orleans is over, there’s still plenty more TV to watch within the franchise. NCIS is still going strong, heading into its 19th season. NCIS: Los Angeles season 13 premieres in October with fan-favorite actress Linda Hunt returning. There’s also an all-new spinoff joining the franchise, NCIS: Hawai’i. Some fans even hope that NCIS: Hawai’i will have a crossover moment with NCIS: New Orleans.
You can catch NCIS and NCIS Hawai’i on Monday, September 20th. Then, season 13 of NCIS: Los Angeles will premiere on October 10th.
