NCIS has been on for so many years that it shouldn’t be surprising that some storylines have been better received than others. And when it comes to romance, that’s especially true. Many NCIS fans really didn’t like the Agent Gibbs and Jenny romance storyline. Here’s why:

Special Agent Gibbs and Director Jenny Shepard have some swoon-worthy flashback moments. However, fans didn’t really like the idea of the two together. A Reddit thread titled NCIS: Why did fans reject the romance of Agent Gibbs and Jenny Shepard? sheds some light on why they didn’t want a romance between the two.

One fan Reddit User, maraudelle, laid it all out. They listed how fans took issue with how Jenny was written, without much depth or backstory outside of Gibbs, making the romance hard to root for because she didn’t feel realistic. Not only did fans dislike her behavior in season 4, but there wasn’t much to the flashback scenes.

The Reddit user explained that one issue was “constant flashbacks to Paris and never expanding on them. If they’re not important to the story stop showing them so much. If they are, then explain them!”

Not only did Jenny not have a satisfying presence for fans, but her unexpected departure was also quite the head-scratcher. Not to mention, a lot of people wanted Gibbs and Kate to get together, meaning that the relationship between Gibbs and Jenny prevented that from happening.

Some Fans Worry that Season 19 Will be The Final Season

No matter what you think of Gibbs and his past flames, there’s a greater issue facing the NCIS fanbase. Many are worrying that season 19 may be the last season of the show. Rumors of a potential ending of NCIS began right around the time rumors of Gibbs actor Mark Harmon wanting to leave the show began.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s possible that Mark Harmon wanted out of the series altogether this year, but CBS threatened to cancel the show if he didn’t come back. This made Mark Harmon sign a contract for another year, but he won’t feature in many episodes.

NCIS is the highest-rated scripted drama on TV. It’s managed to keep that title through major cast exits such as the exits of Pauley Perrette, Michael Weatherly, and Cote De Pablo. But even the highest rated series on TV may not be able to survive the hit of losing the face of the show.

For now, however, it’s all speculation. Fans will have to wait and see what happens, and see if new additions to the cast will add enough to the show. You can catch NCIS season 19 on Monday, September 20th on CBS. Right after season 19 premieres, NCIS: Hawai’i will premiere, adding a fourth spinoff to the successful franchise.
