‘NCIS: Los Angeles’: Showrunner’s Recent Comments Teases Answer to Callen’s Loose Ends

by Anna Dunn

The NCIS: Los Angeles season finale may have been a bit more positive than previous season finales, but that doesn’t mean it left everything answered.

In fact, the NCIS: Los Angeles finale, left multiple loose ends untied. One of which found Callen, portrayed by Chris O’Donnell looking through some filing cabinets. That moment actually foreshadows something big the writers have planned for next season.

Essentially, Callen is going to continue learning about his family in the upcoming season. Showrunner Scott Gemmill told TV Line about what fans can expect with his specific storyline.

“With Hetty being gone, we started to think about Callen’s relationship with her as a child,” Gemmill said. “And then because of Kilbride being somebody who has known Hetty for so long, it seemed like a great opportunity for us to explore something from Callen’s past that he didn’t know about.”

‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ Fans Can Expect Hetty to Return

Not only do Gemmill’s comments tease a Callen-centered storyline, but they also address Hetty’s role in the next season. Many fans worried that Hetty, played by Linda Hunt, wouldn’t return next season. Hetty returned for the NCIS: Los Angeles finale. She was away for season 12 due to the cast and crew wanting to keep her safe from COVID-19.

Thankfully for NCIS: Los Angeles fans, Hunt is not slowing down.

“She was just so thrilled to be back on set. The minute I saw her, she’s like, ‘Let’s talk about next season,” Gemmil told TV Line.

Apparently, they also want to delve deeper into where Hetty was in the fictional story as well.

“We didn’t get to where Hetty was,” Gemmil also said. “That was a big storyline that we were building towards with, what she was involved in. If we were having a normal season, we would have gone to where Hetty was.”

Not much was explained about Hetty’s absence in season 12. Season 13 wants to take a deeper look into both Callan and Hetty, something fans definitely want.

Season 13 of NCIS: Los Angeles will air this fall on CBS along with two other shows in the NCIS franchise. The 19th season of flagship NCIS is set to air, with Mark Harmon featuring in some episodes.

NCIS: Hawai’i will join the franchise with a fresh new location and a new female lead. If Hawai’i is anything like NCIS: Los Angeles and its flagship, it’s sure to be a ratings powerhouse.
