‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ Star Daniela Ruah Reacts to Co-Star Eric Christian Olsen’s Snap of Kensi Blye From Season 1: ‘We Were Puppies’

by Suzanne Halliburton

A fan site gave NCIS: Los Angeles star Daniela Ruah a social media trip back through the show’s past.

In fact, the trip carried Ruah all the way back to season one, when she joined the show as Kensi Blye, the only female special agent in the Office of Special Projects.

Eric Christian Olsen, who plays Ruah’s husband on NCIS: Los Angeles, first saw the photos and shared one to his Instagram Story.

He tagged Ruah in the photo and quipped “117 years ago during season one.”

Ruah replied: “Holy shmoly. Remember when we were puppies?” Puppies, in this case, means young special agents. In real life, Ruah got married and had two children since her debut on the show.

Ruah Was Original Cast Member of NCIS: Los Angeles

Ruah was an original cast member on NCIS: Los Angeles. So she’s grown with the show for the first 12 seasons, appearing in 280 episodes. In fact, Ruah has evolved so much that she directed her first episode earlier this season.

The NCIS: Los Angeles episode was called Russia, Russia, Russia and it ran Feb. 21. And according to IMDB, it was the highest-rated episode of the year, coming in at 8.4.

Ruah did well in her debut despite dealing with Covid restrictions, which hit Los Angeles especially hard.

“We are limited in what we can do,” Ruah said in January of her NCIS: Los Angeles directing debut. “So it’s up to the director to use the camera in a creative way to recreate a rich aesthetic when we have much less to work with.”

“I had to go back a little bit to see the style we had before,” she said. “We used to have hundreds of extras and a full scene, visually rich, that’s something we can’t do now,” she stressed. “It’s an aesthetic that we have to pretend it exists without showing it.”

Ruah’s Directing Debut Was Season Turning Point

The episode was a turning point in the season. Callen, played by Chris O’Donnell, goes to interrogate a Russian asset. But he’s detained and accused of being a Russian spy.

Olsen joined NCIS: Los Angeles in the last few episodes of season one. He and Ruah have been show favorites since then. The two were married on the show in season 10. They now also own the bar The Squid and Dagger.

The 13th season of NCIS: Los Angeles may allow Kensi and Deeks to take the next step in their marriage. And that would be starting a family, or opting not to do so because of the stress of the job. CBS announced that the season premiere will be Oct. 10.

While NCIS moved from Tuesday to Mondays, NCIS: Los Angeles stays put on Sundays. So stay tuned.
