Many people think that actors and actresses have it made — and perhaps in many ways, they do. But one NCIS: Los Angeles star explained just how challenging it can be to perform an emotional scene.

As a matter of fact, research over many years has acknowledged that actors tend to be highly vulnerable to depression and anxiety. Some of that can be linked to the deep emotions they are often required to tap into and express while they are playing a specific role on screen. However, for Eric Christian Olsen, it’s the emotional scenes in a show that drive him to be at his best.

Eric Christian Olsen stars in NCIS: Los Angeles as Detective Marty Deeks. He said back in 2014 that the emotional scenes in a film or television show are when the stakes are at their highest.

“Did you feel challenged differently, with these scenes than maybe what you’ve done in the past?” an interviewer for TV Fanatic asked him.

“Yeah, because the stakes are always higher,” Olsen replied. “Like when you go to these scenes in life, the repercussions if it goes wrong, you know, you’re out there and you’re putting yourself out there.”

In the show, Deeks had previously passed the California Bar Examination and was a public defender. However, he winds up accepting the role of NCIS/LAPD Liasion Officer, before officially becoming an NCIS special agent.

If you are a fan of the show, you know that Deeks doesn’t always have the best of luck, given that many LAPD officers aren’t his biggest fans. As a matter of fact, in the episode “Fame,” Deeks says, “You know how it is with undercover cops. I’ve pissed off more than my fair share of shields.”

But Eric Christian Olsen, the man behind Detective Deeks, is more worried about perfecting the emotional scenes in the military crime show. He says that if it isn’t as authentic as possible, they run the risk of losing their audience.

“When you do a scene like this, it’s the same place, because you’re asking your actors to go to this place and if any fraction of that is false, I think we as an audience detach from it.”

Another interesting fact about NCIS: Los Angeles, is that Eric Christian Olsen plays a couple with his real-life sister-in-law, Daniela Ruah. His character, Marty Deeks is in a relationship with Ruah’s character, Kensi Blye. He credits their close relationship in helping them perform emotional scenes in an “honest” and “seamless” fashion.

“That’s the great thing about Dani and this scene is they are nothing but honest and seamless, which is what I like to call that kind of acting.”
