‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ Season 13 Premiere Photos Show Hetty Making Grand Return

by Suzanne Halliburton

Oh, my. NCIS: Los Angeles gave fans a sneak peek of the season 13 premiere, Thursday. It’s certainly a Hetty-intense episode.

And to think, fans have to wait until Oct. 10 to see the season premiere. An NCIS: Los Angeles taste will have to do, for now.

TV Insider got a look at some behind-the-scenes photos, as well as some episode details. The site’s social media account teased: “Photos for the ‘#NCIS: LA’ Season 13 premiere show Hetty back at OSP — and it looks like Callen wants answers.”

According to the site, here’s the quick synopsis of the premiere: The episode is called Subject 17. Then CBS teased “while Callen suspects Hetty of keeping secrets about his past and Joelle surfaces in her quest to capture Katya, NCIS must track down an informant whose life is in danger. Also, Kensi and Deeks work to expand their family.”

That’s a lot to unpack.

Linda Hunt Needed to Cut Her Time In Studio in Season 12 of NCIS: Los Angeles

Linda Hunt, who plays Hetty, couldn’t appear on set for much of season 12 because of the Covid 19 pandemic. So writers had to create different plots. Hunt, as Hetty, filmed her scenes from her driveway. She’d show up on the show in a remote call from an unidentified war zone. She did return for the final season of the season 12 finale. Callen (Chris O’Donnell) was seen earlier in the episode looking through some of Hetty’s files. So it looks like the two will talk about said files in the season 13 premiere. Callen will want to know how Hetty groomed him for his current job. She’s known him since he was a little boy.

NCIS: Los Angeles showrunner Scott Gemmill already told TV Insider that viewers will find out where Hetty was. Her secret mission of season 12 will be a big plot point. She’ll also get into verbal spats with Admiral Kilbride (Gerald McRaney). The show elevated McRaney to full-time cast for season 13. There’s a photo in the season 13 premiere showing Hetty sitting at her desk as she’s in deep conversation with Kilbride, who towers over her.

Gemmill said of Hetty and Kilbride: “They’re both very smart and very stubborn, so it makes for a fun and volatile dynamic. Kilbride outranks Hetty, but he does respect her, even if he disagrees with her methodology and questions the cost of her successes.”

As for Hetty’s mission: “She’ll try to resolve that on her own,” Gemmill said. “But in the end, it will suck in the entire team—much to Kilbride’s (chagrin).”

And Gemmill also hinted earlier that Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen) and Kensi (Daniela Ruah) will restart conversations about whether they should start a family. It sounds like the couple leans hard into making a family decision in the premiere.
