‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ Star Barrett Foa Requested Specific Shoe Type for His Character: Here’s Why

by John Jamison

For more than a decade, Barrett Foa played technical operator Eric Beale on “NCIS: Los Angeles.” The nature of his position as a tech guy meant that his character was constantly wearing shorts and flip-flops. Combined with the Southern California setting, the relaxed look made sense. But after a few years, Foa begged to wear some pants and sneakers from time to time. Why? Simple. Because he was cold.

TV is always playing tricks on its audience. Whether a show features a winter scene that was actually filmed in the summer heat or vice versa, the realities of the situation don’t always match what we see on screen. In the case of NCIS: Los Angeles, the set itself happens to be pretty chilly. And Eric Beale actor Barrett Foa became a victim of the temperature.

In an interview with Red Carpet News TV, Foa talked about how and why his style on the show changed over the years.

“Warm at last. No, you know. I wear shorts on the show, exclusively,” Foa said. “It could be really cold on set to kind of keep things moving. And flip-flops and shorts after a while were difficult. It was a little chilly. So I was like, ‘Can we just get, like, some sneakers?’ Now I have some Vans. I feel a little more comfortable.”

So he was allowed some sneakers. But for a while, pants were still out of the question for the most part. And it got to the point where the rest of the cast knew if the “NCIS: Los Angeles” star was in character or not based on whether or not he was wearing pants.

Barrett Foa’s Time on ‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ Comes to an End After 12 Seasons

This off-season has seen some major cast shakeups for “NCIS: Los Angeles.” Along with longtime on-screen companion Renee Felice Smith, the Eric Beale actor will not be returning for Season 13 of the show.

The news comes as a disappointment to Beale and Nell Jones fans. But the pair have contributed to over 500 episodes between them.

“It’s the end of an era. I’m so proud of this show. The writing, the acting, the cast, the crew, the fans, and yes, my work on it. Creating and developing a gorgeously fleshed-out character like the brainy, bumbling, beta, billionaire Eric ‘Bulletproof’ Beale over the last 12 years has been an actor’s dream,” Foa told TV Line, offering some parting words to his dedicated fans.

Fans, however, will be relieved to know that both Chris O’Donnell and LL Cool J aren’t going anywhere quite yet. Along with them, Linda Hunt will be back in a more significant role. And Gerald McRaney appears to be primed for a series regular part in the role of Admiral Hollis Kilbride.
