‘NCIS’: Michael Weatherly Explained Why He Doesn’t Consider Show to Be ‘Wholesome’

NCIS” may not be the most intense of nighttime dramas. However, according to one former star, the show is not to be considered “wholesome” by any means.

“I wouldn’t say it was a ‘wholesome’ show because there are some gruesome aspects and certainly we can be a little off-center and kinky and ironic,” said former “NCIS” star Michael Weatherly in a 2012 interview Assignment X interview.

However, the actor does think that there is a genuine aspect of the series which is communicated on the screen is due to the show’s dedicated team. “There’s part of me that thinks that must translate,” Weatherly said.

“NCIS” Offers Entertainment Fitting For the Genre

From serial killers and weekly gruesome murders to “bad guys” setting off explosions or hunting the “NCIS” team members, the word “wholesome” is certainly not one of the first that would come to mind when considering the popular crime-solving series.

In many episodes, there is a buoyancy despite the grim storyline that the audiences may be following. We find ourselves connecting with the “NCIS” team leader, Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon), and the members of his team.

Whatever it is, the formula works. Since 2003 the hit television series has been delighting audiences. The hit CBS drama has also been leaving us on the edges of our seats each week since its premiere nearly twenty years ago.

“Sometimes we hear from people who have awful work experiences, and the product is very successful,” Weatherly noted. This is certainly not the case for the “NCIS” cast, the star added. “That’s not what we do. We have a great work experience and our product is really successful.”

Tony Dinozzo and Ziva David Gave Viewers an Entertaining Storyline To Follow

Weatherly, who left the series during season 13, is a perfect example of the show’s ability to appeal to the audience with a certain sweetness while also giving the audience an edgy storyline.

Weatherly’s character, Tony DiNozzo, had a womanizing quality about him. It was often a running joke in the series that such a “ladies man” would choose a bed that clearly only fits one person. His desire to always sleep alone became part of the joke. However, the forever playboy found his match in a fellow agent, Ziva David. The two eventually struck up a relationship.

Eventually, viewers learn that Ziva had a daughter named Talia. The shocking news comes as fans discover Dinozzo is the girl’s father. This news eventually led to Weatherly’s exit from the series. Weatherly’s character moved to Paris to take care of Talia at the end of the season.
