‘NCIS’: Pauley Perrette’s Warning About Social Media Still Holds True Years Later

NCIS alum Pauley Perrette warned people about social media years ago, and that warning still holds true. The actress played Abby Scuito, the beloved goth forensic scientist. Perrette left the show in 2018 and has since retired from acting.

The NCIS actress warned fans about the internet over a decade ago, but aside from her “MySpace” reference, it feels like she could have said it yesterday.

“I was talking to a young girl the other day.  I was just saying, be careful.  Especially with all these places where people make their own page and all this stuff.  I am not on MySpace.com.  I’m not a fan,” she told Pop Entertainment in 2007. “But then there’s MySpace pages […] posing as me.  Talking to people as me. ”

Now, we have more ability to tell who is who or not. With strict verification processes on all the main social media sites, that sort of misinformation is less pressing. But the truth still stands that there are a lot of people on the internet that aren’t who they say they are.

Perrette Said we Should Watch Out for Misinformation

“Hopefully, I think people will start understanding and talking about it more that the internet is not a valid resource for everything.  It’s a starting place, but it’s really out of control,” the NCIS actress said.

The actress does have social media, but its clear she was aware of the risks long before they became evident.

“No matter what you read or see, until you know somebody and really hang out with them, you don’t really know.  We don’t really know each other,” she said. Now, everyone is on the internet. It’s easy to forget that what people post is only a tiny fraction of their lives. And of course, people could be lying.

“It’s really becoming this world where nobody exists except online and it makes me sad.  Like, God, get off the internet and go walk with your friend,” she said.

All these problems, of course, were just beginning to start. Unfortunately, almost everything would become harder to navigate from there. Thankfully, we have verification systems that work for the most part so nobody could successfully pretend to be Pauley Perrette, but the misinformation and the lack of genuine connection were only in their beginning phases.

The Actress Left ‘NCIS’ in 2018

During her time on the show, Perrette gained a ton of fans, becoming one of the most recognizable people on primetime television.

Her role as Abby Scuito is genuinely iconic, and fans miss her on the show, which has undergone a ton of cast changes. For instance, Mark Harmon, who plays Gibbs, just left the show after the fourth episode of season 19. Now, it’s unclear where the show will go next without characters like Abby, Ziva, Gibbs, and Tony.
