Rocky Carroll Discusses Death of ‘NCIS’ Showrunner

One of the stars of the series, Rocky Carroll (who plays Leon Vance in the series) spoke out about the pain Gary Glasberg’s death caused the “NCIS” family.

“It was horrible. It was surreal. Because it happened right in the middle of the season, Gary passed away in September, we were just getting our legs under us, and I think for the bulk of the season, I just kept looking over my shoulder, expecting him to walk onto the set. It was very hard to process, because we had to keep going. It wasn’t like we had a hiatus to get used to it or anything. We had to work the rest of that season,” Carroll said during an interview with AssignmentX in 2018.

Besides Carroll, the President of CBS Television Studios David Stapf, also spoke out about how much the death impacted him. The two were close friends and spoke every day on the phone.

“He was a touchstone for me. He was a guy who always kept life in perspective … For me, Gary would have been the guy I called when something like this happened. He was a really good listener. That was one of the things that made him a great showrunner,” Stapf said to Variety at the time.

Other Deaths in the ‘NCIS’ World

Unfortunately, the “NCIS” cast and crew have had to deal with tragic deaths on more than one occasion.

One of the most recent was Heath Freeman. He was a guest star on “NCIS” and was also known for his role as the killer Howard Epps on “Bones.” He was 41 when he died suddenly this month.

“A brilliant human being with an intense and soulful spirit, he leaves us with an indelible imprint in our hearts. His life was filled with deep loyalty, affection, and generosity towards his family and friends, and an extraordinary zest for life,” his manager Joe S. Montifiore said to People.

Another recent death was Harriet Margulies. She was a longtime contributor to the popular procedural drama. She spend about two decades working as a producer’s assistant and then served as the audience liaison for “NCIS” as well.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, she passed away in late October from a stroke at the age of 94. She also worked for shows like “Magnum, P.I.,” “Kojak,” and “Quantum Leap.”

She was honored for her time working with “NCIS” during an episode of season 19.
