There’s been some speculation in the NCIS community as to whether or not Gibbs is coming back for season 19. What with all the rumors about Mark Harmon stepping away from NCIS, it’s rational that fans would have some concerns.

But, recently, the new season 19 poster is giving fans some hope; the promotional image features Mark Harmon’s special agent Gibbs front and center, surrounded by the rest of the cast. They seemed to be gathered in the unnamed diner, some holding coffee mugs, others seated in booths. The image is a powerful group shot that captures every character’s personality in such a simple scene.

According to CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl, the poster doesn’t represent anything out of the ordinary. She told TV Line, “We’re highlighting our cast in an interesting and fun and provocative way. That’s all it’s trying to say.”

‘NCIS’: Blood in the Water

The season 19 opener, titled “Blood in the Water,” premieres on Sept. 20. The agents search for Gibbs amidst his boat wreckage, looking for his body, at least. But, Gibbs swam to safety at the end of season 18, so we currently know he’s not dead. Showrunner Steven D. Binder told TV Line, “We know he’s not dead right there, and we know he’s able to swim well enough. All things are still possible with Gibbs.”

Binder says he wants to step away from the overarching story arcs and get back to NCIS‘ roots. He told TV Line, “I think it’s time for us to sort of regroup and get back to telling good mysteries of the week with interesting characters, interesting stories and emotional hooks, and a satisfying ending.”

What’s Been Happening on the Show?

Recently, in season 18, Gibbs and Marcie Warren, played by Mark Harmon’s real-life wife Pam Dawber, have been searching for a serial killer together. Gibbs has also been suspended from the NCIS since episode 10, “Watchdog.” This gives him the opportunity to have a no-holds-barred approach to investigating. Sure, he doesn’t have all the NCIS technology, but he also doesn’t have all the NCIS rules hanging over him.

Gibbs getting suspended became the turning point where fans speculated that Mark Harmon wanted to leave NCIS. Fans thought maybe he’d be back as a guest role in season 19; that Katrina Law as Jessica Knight could become the new team leader. Maybe Gary Cole’s character Alden Park would take over, or the show could put McGee in the captain’s chair. There are so many rumors floating around it’s hard to know what to believe. But, it seems that, for the time being, Gibbs isn’t going anywhere. At least, not until he fulfills his arc.
