On NCIS, Jamie Lee Curtis was arguably one of Gibbs’ best relationships; Mark Harmon and Curtis had great chemistry, and Dr. Samantha Ryan was a complex, interesting character that brought her own light to the show.

After news of Mark Harmon’s official exit from NCIS in season 19 episode 4, there was an outpouring of love and sadness from fans and former cast members alike. Jamie Lee Curtis is one such former cast member who shared her emotions on Instagram.

“I just read that my friend, Mark Harmon is leaving his leadership position @ncis_cbs,” Curtis began her post, captioned under a photo of her and Harmon in character on NCIS season 9. “One of the unexpected delights of my varied career was being able to do five episodes opposite him and his team in front of and behind the camera.”

She went on to share a memory from one of her episodes, writing, “My favorite line was when I was coming down from his bedroom, ‘Practice makes perfect.’ Certainly worked for him and his Jethro Gibbs character.”

Curtis congratulated Harmon on all of his hard work and success as Gibbs. She wrote, “Well done Harmon. Gary would be/is so proud!”

‘NCIS’: Mark Harmon’s Exit Causes Avalanche of Love for Character

In Monday night’s NCIS episode, “Great Wide Open,” Gibbs and McGee traveled to Alaska. They were in search of information on the company that hired Lemere as a contract killer, but Gibbs made a crucial decision opting to stay in Alaska. Throughout the episode, there were moments of Gibbs seemingly saying goodbye to his team. Although at the time, it just seemed like he was saying typical farewells before a trip, and that he’d be back.

But there was something about these goodbyes. They were too full of compliments and advice and “you’re a great friend, Ducky.” Too sentimental for someone who’d be back in a few days. And there’s our first clue.

It only seems fitting that Gibbs would spend his last episode with McGee, the last remaining original cast member. McGee has been through it all with Gibbs, so it’s only right that he gets the final goodbye. Gibbs tells McGee, “I could not have hoped for anyone better to watch my back for the past 18 years than you, Tim.” Cue the waterworks.

On Jamie Lee Curtis’ post alone there were nearly 53,000 likes and so many comments praising Mark Harmon’s character and talent on the show. Fans praised the chemistry Harmon not only had with Curtis, but with the entire cast. Continual comments of “he will be missed on NCIS” filled the comment section.

But, it’s nice to know that his exit didn’t end in death. There’s no better way I’d like to imagine Gibbs than living out the rest of his days, fly fishing in Alaska with that rare smile on his face, finally at peace.
