Mark Harmon has had his hands full leading “NCIS” for over 18 years. He’s been the face of the crime drama since it premiered as the iconic, stoic, and sarcastic Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
In fact, the show is the second-longest-running scripted, non-animated U.S. primetime TV series that is currently airing. It is following behind “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” which is 22 seasons and counting.
Not only has he played Gibbs for nearly two decades, but he’s taken on a different kind of leadership role with the “NCIS” franchise. Mark Harmon has been the producer and executive producer of the show since 2008.
Mark Harmon as a Producer
On top of it all, Mark Harmon also has his very own production company called Wings Productions. He started the company to produce the show “NCIS: New Orleans.” Sadly, that show has come to an end now after seven seasons. “NCIS: Hawai’i” is starting up instead, which some fans are speculating, with no verification yet, that Mark Harmon might be involved with the production.
In an interview with Parade from 2019, Harmon opened up about the inspiration for the company’s name.
“My [production] company is named Wings after the 1927 William Wellman movie Wings. That’s the first movie I remember, a silent film, and I just remember sitting there, being drawn into that TV set,” Harmon said.
“Wings” is a silent war film that is set during WWI. It was produced by Lucien Hubbard and directed by William Wellman. The movie actually won the very first Academy Award for Best Picture. It also helped launch the career of Gary Cooper.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, as for producing, Harmon has also been working on bringing John Sanford’s best-selling “Prey” books to CBS. He will serve as the executive producer. The show will be about a Minneapolis homicide detective named Lucas Davenport. His best friend is a profiler and psychology professor and nun, which is quite the combination. The two join forces to hunt down what they consider their “prey.”
It’s unclear what stage the show is at. It does not currently show up on the actor’s IMDb page as being in production. It may have been delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Harmon and ‘NCIS: Hawai’i’
Some fans are speculating what kind of involvement, if any, Mark Harmon will have with the upcoming spin-off series, “NCIS: Hawai’i.”
Now that “NCIS: New Orleans” is over, which he worked on as the executive producer, Harmon has an open slot in his schedule it seems. Although he seems to be busy, Harmon will still be showing up as Gibbs on “NCIS” for the confirmed 19th season.
There’s also speculation about a possible crossover that may occur between “NCIS” and “NCIS: Hawai’i.” Both “NCIS: New Orleans” and “NCIS: Los Angeles” started off by appearing on the mothership series. After that, those characters appeared in their very own series.
Many fans are wondering if this crossover is happening with “NCIS: Hawai’i” as well. Will we ever see Mark Harmon next to the first female lead, Vanessa Lachey?
According to TV Insider, the “NCIS: New Orleans” team may even come from Sin City to visit the sandy beaches.
“Never say never … I’ll be a hundred percent honest with you. We are happy for all crossovers … ” Executive Producer Christopher Silber said.
