‘NCIS’ Star Mark Harmon Revealed His Powerful Daily Goal

by Quentin Blount

Who better to take your daily motivation from than NCIS star Mark Harmon? After all, he has become one of the most tenured actors in the entire television industry.

Even if you aren’t a fan of NCIS, you probably can recognize who Mark Harmon is. He has played the role of Leroy Jethro Gibbs — the main character on NCIS — since the show first aired back in September of 2003. Gibbs is a former Marine Corps Scout Sniper turned special agent of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.

It goes without saying that Harmon is uber-talented. As a matter of fact, not only is he an incredibly successful actor, he was also a top-notch athlete back in his high school and college days. The son of Heisman Trophy winner Tom Harmon and actress Elyse Knox, Harmon wound up with a scholarship offer from UCLA and opted to play for his hometown team.

Harmon was a key cog in the team’s turnaround. He took over a program that finished just 2-7-1 the year before. But with Harmon under center, the team went on to a combined 17-5 record in 1972 and 1973. In his first-ever game as a Bruin, the NCIS star led his team to a dramatic win over the two-time defending national champion Nebraska Cornhuskers. In doing so, he and his teammates snapped Nebraska’s 32-game win streak.

So, just what makes Mark Harmon so good at everything he does? He says that it isn’t natural-born talent, it’s simply hard work.

“I’ve never been the most talented, as an athlete or as an actor,” Harmon admitted to Variety Magazine. “But I understand the work ethic. I try hard but make mistakes all the time and try to be better from those mistakes.”

‘NCIS’ Star Vows to Learn Something New Every Day

It may sound a little cliche, but Mark Harmon may have a point here. More times than not, hard work will win out over talent any day of the week. However, he says there is more to it than just working hard. Part of his success stems from doing his best to learn something new every day.

“My daily thing is to learn something today that I didn’t know yesterday, and that’s the way I intend to live the rest of my life That’s the way I play the game.”

He says that another one of his goals “is to make actors who come here and miss this place when they leave.” One of the ways he has been able to do that is by lobbying to bring the set of NCIS to the northern part of Los Angeles County, in Santa Clarita.

“You want to sit down with the editors and discuss something, they’re here. It’s like a family.”
