Three NFL head coaches were fined for not wearing face masks during games. Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan, and Denver Broncos coach Vic Fangio did not wear face masks on the sidelines.

The NFL Fines

ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news on Monday (September 21) via anonymous sources. All three coaches were each individually fined $100,000 by the NFL. The coaches violated the organization’s protocol regarding face masks being worn at all times on the sidelines. Additionally, each team was fined $250,000. The total punishment for the three head coaches was $1,050,000.

According to USA Today, the Vice President of NFL Football Operations, Troy Vincent, sent a memo to all teams regarding the new requirement. Vincent said in the memo that anyone who violated the new order to wear a face mask at all times on the sidelines, will be subject to disciplinary measures to themselves and their teams.

Other coaches have opted to wear neck gaitors, cloth face masks, or face shields for the duration of the games.

Other Safety Measures

Unlike the NBA and NHL, the NFL’s team members are not in a bubble. For the week of August 21-29, there were four positive COVID-19 tests among players and six positive tests among their personnel. They tested a total of 58,621 people in the organization with 2,747 players being tested.

The NFL now has a “Reserve/COVID-19” list for those who either test positive or have to be quarantined because they were in contact with someone who did test positive. Furthermore, teams will not reveal any player’s medical status. Numerous protocols are in place after being put on the reserve list.

Another Scandal

Coaches weren’t the only people not obeying the new rules. Despite the league not allowing any guests to see the games in person, Brett Favre attended the Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers game on Sunday (September 20). He was also photographed not wearing a face mask or having one on his visible body.

Fans immediately bashed the league and Favre for not following the new orders. Even players were not happy to have his attendance. Buccaneers center player Ryan Jensen tweeted about the visitor. “So he can go to the game but my family cant? Interesting,” he wrote.
