The NFL TV ratings are in for Week 4’s Thursday Night Football matchup between the Denver Broncos and the New York Jets. The game drew 5.4 million viewers.
The viewership numbers remained steady after last week’s 5.43 million viewers tuned in for the Miami Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars game, according to ShowBuzzDaily.com. However, last week’s ratings came in at a 4-year low with Thursday’s game staying consistent with Week 3 numbers.
While the game won the night in terms of TV ratings, it marked a seismic drop from Week 4 of the 2019 season. Last year, the Philadelphia Eagles squared off against the Green Bay Packers drawing in 17.62 million viewers and a 10.5 rating, Sportsnaut reports. The Week 4 game in 2019 was the most-watched TNF broadcast since 2015.
Part of the reason behind the dip in viewers on Thursday Night Football is due to the NFL’s adjustment of its broadcast schedule this year. Weeks 2-4 did not broadcast on Fox. Also, the games did not stream on Amazon.
Week 5 ‘Thursday Night Football’ NFL TV Ratings May Likely Come Back Strong
The NFL added Thursday Night Football in 2006. While Sunday Night Football and Monday Night Football attract the largest crowds, TNF helps bring in billions of dollars more for the league as well as drawing more eyes.
This season, TNF significantly struggled compared to years past. In Week 3, the Dolphins-Jaguars game lost nearly 1 million viewers compared to the 2019 season’s Week 3 broadcast. Week 2’s Bengal-Browns matchup saw a major dip in viewership compared to the 2018 season.
Despite TNF‘s struggles, viewership numbers may likely improve in Week 5. Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers take on the Chicago Bears. The contest pits two of the best teams in the NFL against one another. Given that, and Brady’s star power, Week 5 TV ratings might mark the best of the 2020 NFL season so far.
Another reason why the NFL can likely expect an uptick in viewers on next week’s TNF is that it is the first game this season broadcast on NFL Network, Fox, and streaming on Amazon.
