Nicolas Cage Reportedly Turned Down Making ‘National Treasure 3’

by Jacklyn Krol

Is National Treasure 3 still happening? Things aren’t looking up for Nicolas Cage.

In a new interview with Variety, Cage seemingly addressed the third installment. He was promoting his latest film, Pig. The movie features Cage’s character Rob leaving his job as a famed celebrity chef to leave the bright lights and own a pet pig. He compared his recent situation with his character’s life.

“I do feel that I’ve gone into my own wilderness and that I’ve left the small town that is Hollywood,” Cage told the outlet. “I don’t know exactly why Rob left his stardom. It’s never fully explained, and I like that about the movie. But as for me, I don’t know if I’d want to go back. I don’t know if I’d want to go and make another Disney movie. It would be terrifying. It’s a whole different climate. There’s a lot of fear there.”

Walt Disney Pictures acted as the producers for both the 2004 original National Treasure and the 2007 sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets. Along with the two films, he also worked on Disney’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice in 2010 and lent his voice to G-Force in 2009.

Everything We Know About Nicolas Cage And ‘National Treasure 3’

In 2013, actor Justin Bartha, who portrayed Riley Poole in the films confirmed to Motion Captured that a script was written.

Back in 2016, Nicolas Cage actually spoke about the third installment to Entertainment Weekly. He explained that fact-checking was the reason that the script was taking so long.

“I do know that those scripts are very difficult to write, because there has to be some credibility in terms of the facts and fact-checking, because it was relying on historical events,” he shared. “And then you have to make it entertaining. I know that it’s been a challenge to get the script where it needs to be. That’s as much as I’ve heard. But they’re still working on it.”

Disney CEO Bob Iger spoke about the potential movie’s development in a shareholder meeting.

“I know Jerry Bruckheimer who produced them has had conversations with our studio a number of times about it, and there have been some developments along the way, but as of right now we have not green-lit as we say, a National Treasure 3. But I do know there is time and some resources spent on development,” he revealed.

Although a third movie seems to be still up in the air, a series is in the works. Last year, Variety reported that original producer Jerry Bruckheimer will be handling the original series for Disney+. The series is said to explore, ” identity, community and patriotism through the eyes of Jess Morales, a 20-year-old DREAMer who sets off on an adventure to recover lost treasure and uncover her mysterious family history.”
