Filming on “Being the Ricardos” is well underway, and star Nicole Kidman is not breaking any rules on the set. The movie is a biopic of “I Love Lucy” stars Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.
Kidman, 53, recently shared a photo on Instagram of herself standing next to a sign reading, “Closed Set. No social media. No photos.” And that’s all her followers get to see of the “Being the Ricardos” set.
“Currently in production,” Kidman posted. “#BeingTheRicardos.”
Nicole Kidman Stars in ‘Being the Ricardos’
The film examines the offscreen lives of Ball and Arnaz and tells the story of two simultaneous crises for the couple – one professional and one personal. It takes place in the window of time between a Monday table read and a Friday episode filming. Directed by Aaron Sorkin, it also stars Javier Bardem as Arnaz and J.K. Simmons and Nina Arianda as William Frawley and Vivian Vance, who played Fred and Ethel on the show.
Sorkin wrote the screenplay, according to Collider. Further, Lucie Arnaz, the iconic TV couple’s daughter, is executive producing the movie along with her brother, Desi Arnaz Jr.
“My brother Desi and I signed on because this is a story of our folks’ real-life passionate, tempestuous and complicated relationship and not a recreation of ‘I Love Lucy,’” she said in a statement. Also, “Aaron Sorkin has not told this tale as a ‘cradle to grave’ biopic. Instead, he’s chosen to illuminate a snippet of time during an incredibly intense period of their show’s enduring success. The casting choices have all been inspired and Desi and I are so looking forward to seeing what this impressive group of actors make of Sorkin’s delicious script.”
Amazon Studios is producing and distributing “Being the Ricardos.” And the company announced in March that production had begun on the film, per UPI.
As if to illustrate that development, Kidman was recently spotted between takes in Los Angeles wearing a shoulder-length red wig.
Kidman’s Casting Was Controversial
There was some initial pushback from fans when producers announced that the role of Ball would go to Nicole Kidman. Many had hoped to see “Will and Grace” star Debra Messing play Lucy.
But Lucie Arnaz defended Kidman’s casting. She also told fans to wait and see the finished product. “And P.S.: The voting is over,” she added, not to put too fine a point on it.
For her part, Kidman spoke to Variety this January about getting the role. However, she did not address the casting controversy.
“I was like, ‘Yeah, I would love to give it a go,’” Kidman said of her decision to take the role. Moreover, “I love Lucille, having looked now and delved into her. She’s an amazing woman. I’m very excited for people to see what Aaron found out about her and the way he’s interpreted Desi and Lucy… I didn’t know any of this.”
“I Love Lucy” fans will have to wait to see what previously little-known detail of Ball’s life Sorkin has decided to dramatize. In the meantime, it looks like Kidman has gone as far as she can go with behind-the-scenes pictures.
