The FBI has released its report on Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain’s death. The organization made the file public to view.

Cobain’s death shocked the music and entertainment industry in the 1990s. The lead singer of Nirvana, Cobain defined the grunge genre. But in 1994, the singer died via his own hand in an apparent suicide. Following his death, the Federal Bureau of Investigation put together a report on the subject.

For years, the FBI withheld that report like many government documents from the public. But that didn’t stop Nirvana fans and conspiracy theorists from commenting on the document. Now, the report is available in “The Vault,” an FBI Freedom of Information Act library.

The report is 10-pages in length. The FBI redacted the names of letters included in the report for their privacy. But several fans of Nirvana urged the FBI to open an investigation into Cobain’s death. The report chronicles theories from people that Cobain may have been murdered.

For instance, one letter wrote, “There has since been evidence found that he was killed and didn’t commit suicide, as originally thought.”

Another letter also called for justice for Cobain. They wrote, “Millions of fans around the world would like to see the inconsistencies surrounding the death cleared up for once and for all. It is sad to think that an injustice of this nature can be allowed in the United States.”

Kurt Cobain’s Life and Death

When he passed away in 1994, Cobain’s death became the source of much speculation. As included in the report, the TV series “Unsolved Mysteries” even produced a segment on Cobain’s death. Over the years, the FBI responded to petitions for an investigation by insisting it was not in the bureau’s jurisdiction.

“We appreciate your concern that Mr. Cobain may have been the victim of a homicide,” said one response in the file. “However, most homicide/death investigations generally fall within the jurisdiction of state and local authorities. … Based on the information you provided, we are unable to identify any violation of federal law within the investigative jurisdiction of the FBI.”

Cobain was the lead singer of Nirvana in the 1980s and 90s. Formed in Aberdeen, Washington, Nirvana produced their seminal album “Nevermind” in 1991. They established themselves as a key part of the Washington grunge scene. But their music quickly caught national appeal. Cobain battled depression and substance abuse even as the band reached wider success. In 1994, Cobain shot and killed himself at his Seattle home.

Cobain and his music continue to be popular decades after his death.
