Sir Michael Caine just set the record straight about his retirement: he’s not going anywhere. In a recent interview, the Interstellar and Batman actor implied he may be ending his career soon. Now, however, he’s walking those statements back.

In a recent interview with BBC 5, the actor discussed the lack of opportunity available for older actors. At 88 years old, he’s felt frustrated with the lack of roles for him. He referred to his role on his latest film, Best Sellers, as “his last role, really.”

“There haven’t been any offers obviously for two years because nobody’s been making any movies I’d wanna do. But also I’m 88. There’s not exactly scripts pouring out with a leading man who’s 88, you know?’  he continued. But this sparked major retirement rumors. The actor took to Twitter to set the record straight.

“I haven’t retired and not a lot of people know that,” he joked.

Michael Caine is Setting his Sights on Writing

While Caine isn’t retiring, he hasn’t been able to take on as much work in recent years due to health complications. in the interview with BBC 5, he discussed that further.

“I haven’t worked for two years and I have a spine problem which affects my legs so I can’t walk very well”, he said. While dealing with that pain, Caine decided to write a book. It appears that while Caine will still act, writing is a big passion for him at the moment.

“And I also wrote a book, a couple of books which were published and were successful so I’m now not an actor – I’m a writer,” he said. “which is lovely because as an actor, you have to get up at half past 6 in the morning and go to the studio. As a writer, you can start writing without leaving the bed.”

Sir Michael Caine has come out with multiple novels including Blowing the Bloody Doors off, The Elephant to Hollywood, and What’s it all about?

According to People, Caine’s breakout role was in a 1964 war film called Zulu. After that, his career took off in a major way. He’s been in Alfie (1966), The Italian Job (1969), Get Carter (1971), The Prestige (2006), Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014), and many more titles.

For many fans of his work, it’s very exciting that Caine is remaining in the film industry. His roles are known for being incredibly in-depth and empathetic portrayals. He’s been responsible for more than a few tear-jerking moments and his performances are consistently welcomed by audiences. Hopefully, he’ll be able to find more film roles for 88-year-olds out there, because Sir Michael Caine definitely deserves it.
