Mötley Crüe jammed together for the first time on this day back in 1981.

The band celebrated its 40th anniversary on social media. Mötley Crüe shared a video of some of their greatest moments along with a custom cake.

“On this date, Nikki Sixx jammed with Tommy Lee and Greg Leon for the first time. Leon left and then Mick Mars and Vince Neil were later recruited.”

The band released a statement for their fans to commemorate the special and historic day.

“When we started this band / All we needed, needed was a laugh / Years gone by, I’d say we’ve kicked some ass,” they wrote. “It’s always been about great songs and over-the-top live shows for us. The fans were always right by our side. We can’t forget the 4 decades of fans who have counted themselves as CRÜEHEADS from day 1, supporting us through it all. To them we are in debt – thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Happy 40th Birthday. Nikki, Vince, Mick & Tommy”

Beginnings of a Mötley Crüe

Sixx recently left his former band, London, before creating Mötley Crüe. His idea behind the band was to be known for “sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll” and so he could be in charge. Lee and Leon already knew each other and played in the group Suite 19. Once Leon left the group, the pair looked through ads in The Recycler. “Loud, rude, aggressive guitar player available,” Mars’ ad read.

Although they didn’t recognize each other at the time, Sixx and Mars previously met.

According to Loudwire, Mars played in the band White Horse. He visited Magnolia Liquors, where Sixx was working as a teenager. Sixx later shared that he was drinking and using drugs when they first met. Mars saw his ensemble and asked what kind of music he listened to. Sixx mentioned KISS, a band Mars hated.

However, he still invited him to the band’s show at The Stone Pony. Little did they know that they would form one of the most legendary rock bands of all time.
