On This Day: Reba McEntire’s First Film, Sci-Fi Movie ‘Tremors’ Featuring Kevin Bacon Premiered in 1990

by Katie Maloney

Thirty one years ago today, Reba McEntire made her film debut with the sci-fi cult classic movie, Tremors.

Tremors is a fantastically ridiculous b-movie about an isolated desert town under attack by giant, mutant worms. Reba stars in the film as Heather, a long-gun wielding, kick-butt heroine fighting for her life. She even saves her husband from being eaten alive at one point.

Although the film didn’t perform as well as expected in theaters, Tremors quickly became a beloved cult classic. The film even inspired four sequels, most recently 2018’s Tremors: A Cold Day in Hell. In celebration of it’s 31st anniversary, McEntire opened up about her experiences on set.

“Finally, they came in to get me on my first day on the set, and my one line was, ‘Ew, stinks too!’ They said, ‘Cut! That’s a wrap,’ and I said, ‘Yes! My first day on my first movie!’ Everyone looked at me like I was crazy, but they clapped a little bit. It was so much fun,” says McEntire.

Some Fans Only Know Reba McEntire From ‘Tremors’

During an interview, Reba reveals that many fans only know her from her movie debut. In fact, some people don’t even know that she’s a country superstar.

“I was singing the National Anthem at a football game… it might have been the World Series for baseball. The sound guy said, ‘I gotta tell ya, Tremors is my favorite movie. Can I take a picture with you?’ So many times, people wouldn’t even know I sang. They would just be like, ‘I love Tremors,'” says McEntire.

McEntire was cast in the movie after making an appearance on the Pat Sajak Show. When she started filming, she was also touring. She even got married in between tour dates and filming.

“But the thing that made Tremors hard for me is that I was touring on the weekend, flying to L.A., getting on a puddle jumper to Olancha, California, and then driving to Long Pine to stay in a motel. And then they’d come get me at 6 in the morning to come to set,” says McEntire. “When I was through with that, I’d go back to touring, then I even got married in Lake Tahoe during the filming cause I had shows at Caesars in Lake Tahoe. So I finished the week, got married, did two or three shows, then went back to filming,” she says.

In true Reba McEntire fashion, she didn’t even blink an eye at the long schedules and hard work. “I just was loving what I did,” says McEntire.
