‘Our Idiot Brother’ Former Child Actor Matthew Mindler’s Mom Speaks Out About His ‘Crippling Anxiety’ Before His Death

“Our Idiot Brother” lost one of its brightest stars. Matthew Mindler starred in the comedy-drama when he was just a child actor. Sadly, he passed away last week at the age of 19. Mindler’s former cast, friends, and family mourned his passing.

Now, Mindler’s mother Monica is speaking out on her son’s death. According to TMZ, Mindler died by his own hand, shocking Monica and his family. According to the outlet, via Fox News, Monica said her son grappled with “crippling anxiety” throughout his life. But in his first few weeks in college, he appeared happy and enjoying himself.

The news of her son’s passing devastated Monica. Mindler’s mother said her “heart is crushed.”

Mindler reportedly attended Millersville University in Pennsylvania. According to his mother, he stayed in close contact with her and his family during this transition. Monica was worried that the move to college could exasperate longstanding anxiety issues.

But Mindler promised his mother he was adapting just fine. In fact, he said he had already started making friends during his first week. He also planned to start a computer programming club on campus. As far as job prospects, Mindler had an interview for the IT department as well.

Monica tried to reach her son last Tuesday. But he failed to answer her messages. That night Mindler didn’t return to his dorm room like usual. Monica had planned to pick up Mindler from college that coming Friday. She wanted him to have a weekend at home to relax from the stresses of the big move.

Matthew Mindler Found Dead

But Monica noticed that her messages didn’t seem to reach her son. The messages appeared as green text instead of the usual IMessages. This suggested to her that Matthew Mindler either had his phone off or was in an area with a bad connection. He never ended up replying.

Officials ruled that Mindler committed suicide. They found his body near campus that Saturday. In the wake of her son’s death, Monica said she appreciates the support she’s received.

“We appreciate the support, concern and outpouring of prayers from Millersville University, the students and the community,” she told TMZ. “My heart is crushed and my mind cannot yet fathom this reality.”

Mindler had a bright future in computers. But he got his start as an actor when he was only a child. He first appeared on the soap opera “As the World Turns” in 2009. But his biggest recognition came when he starred alongside both Paul Rudd and Elizabeth Banks in “Our Idiot Brother.”

He later transitioned into stage performances, appearing in “This American Life” in 2014. He last appeared in the TV movie “Chad: An American Boy” before moving away from acting.
