Owen Wilson Opens Up About How His Brother Supported Him During Mental Health Struggles

by Kati Michelle

Owen Wilson joins the growing brigade of celebrities opening up about their mental health struggles. Other celebrities who have recently spoken out about their mental health journeys include Christopher Meloni, Bindi Irwin, and Simone Biles among others.

Owen Wilson is a Survivor

In a lengthy and quirky talk with Esquire, Wilson doesn’t shy away from his past demons. In fact, Wilson makes his first public acknowledgment of his attempt to take his own life back in 2007. The star usually avoided the topic and still didn’t go into much detail surrounding the event, but he talked about coming out on the other side. Wilson heavily relied on his friends and family for support and had to go about a sort of re-integration to his life. He recounts how his brother stayed with him to make sure he wouldn’t have to sleep alone. Moreover, his brother wrote daily schedules to give Owen something to look forward to each day. The organization also added structure, which is important for one’s mental health. The duo went about life with this routine, slowly building up to Owen’s autonomy again. It’s the baby steps that saved him.

Owen Wilson On Daddy Duty

Wilson doesn’t ever divulge much information about his two young sons for their privacy, but he did talk about how they bond. The seven and ten-year-old have grand imaginations to match that of their father’s. The boys like tapping into their creative energy to come up with fantastical stories and non-traditional games. Just talking about his sons usually elicits a beaming Wilson:

“Sometimes telling the stories at night, you do take a little pride that these guys are into this story! One of them even said, ‘Dad, you should do something with this. This is a really good story!’

A World of ‘Wow’s

A decade removed from one of his darkest times, Owen Wilson maintains a bright-eyed view of the future. Wilson is someone who is continuously curious and quite frankly just exudes a fun-loving spirit. It’s nice to see him come back into himself and grow. In a moment of reflection, Wilson described his current state.

“I don’t know. I’ve been in sort of a lucky place of feeling pretty appreciative of things,” he says, seeming almost surprised. “I know everything’s kind of up and down, but when you get on one of these waves, you’ve gotta ride it as long as you can. I’ve just felt—yeah. Feeling pretty grateful. Well, grateful’s one of those words that get used all the time. Appreciative. Of, you know, stuff.”

As one of the most iconic actors and comedians of arguably all time, it’s amazing the levelheadedness that remains with Wilson. We are proud of him for his healing journey and hope his iconic exclamations of “wow” can continue to perforate our eardrums for many years to come.
