Patrick Mahomes is speaking out about the moment when the Kansas City Chiefs and the Houston Texans paused for a moment of silence during Thursday night’s NFL season opener. The demonstration sparked controversy at the stadium as well as on the Internet.

“Obviously with everything going on in this country, we wanted to show that we’re unified as a league and we’re not going to let playing football distract us from what we’re doing and making change in this world,” the 24-year-old athlete said after the game.

Prior to the season-opening matchup, members from the KC Chiefs and the Houston Texans locked arms as part of a show of unity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

Mahomes and Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson came together with the idea to lead the demonstration. During the postgame interview, Mahomes praised Watson’s leadership ability and admired his example. “I feel like DeShaun is a great guy who shows that and leads by example every single day,” he said.

Patrick Mahomes on the Kneeling Protests Leading Up to the Season Opener

Earlier this week Mahomes spoke out about the purpose behind the unity demonstrations.

“We’re trying to fix something, we’re trying to make it where it’s equal, everybody feels safe, everybody feels secure, everybody can go about living their lives and they really, truly care about the person next to him,” he said, The Wichita Eagle reports.

Mahomes also voiced his frustration with people asking about kneeling during the National Anthem. He continued by adding: “People are asking, ‘Are you going to kneel, are you not going to kneel?’ They’re not asking about the actual injustices that you’re trying to fix and what you’re trying to help the community with.”

While both teams hoped to show unity, others on social media and at the game didn’t take it that way. After the game, thousands took to Twitter to speak out about the situation. Learn more here.
