Paul McCartney Said the Beatles Breakup Was ‘Like a Divorce’

To many, the Beatles was the greatest band to ever grace the world with music. And when they broke up in 1970, Paul McCartney didn’t talk about the events that led to the split. But now, he’s decided to set the record straight.

According to a snippet from McCartney’s upcoming book, The Lyrics: 1956 to The Present, John Lennon was the major force between the Beatle’s demise. McCartney revealed that Lennon had made “hurtful comments” and in 1969, he had “gleefully” shared that the band was breaking up.

“John said, ‘Oh, I’ve been wanting to tell you this, but I’m leaving the Beatles.’ We were all shocked. Relations had been strained, but we sat there saying, ‘What? Why?” It was like a divorce, and he had just had a divorce from Cynthia the year before,’” he wrote.

The members had been struggling with drama for a few years. But they were still shocked when Lennon decided to walk. And furthermore, Lennon later told the press that McCartney decided to abandon his bandmates to start a solo career. So McCartney was the person responsible for the breakup. But McCartney denies those claims and said reading Lennon’s words in newspapers was infuriating and confusing.

“So, I’m having to read all this stuff, and on the one hand, I’m thinking, ‘Oh f*** off, you f***ing idiot,’ but on the other hand, I’m thinking, ‘Why would you say that? Are you annoyed at me or are you jealous or what?’”.
