‘Pawn Stars’: Chumlee Once Bought a New Age Bike That’s Out of This World

What’s that? Chumlee is just a relatable goofball included on Pawn Stars for comedic effect? We beg to differ. The man has some picking chops if we’ve ever seen ’em. His Season 8 vintage bike find was enough to make Mike Wolfe himself proud.

And if anyone knows a thing or two about 1959 Bowden Spacelanders, it’s the American Pickers star. He’s been collecting bikes since childhood. But who knew Chumlee had such deep bike knowledge of his own? What’s more, the whole deal happened at random when Chum was out running errands for the shop.

Now, is it likely that the Pawn Stars personality just happened to spot a man polishing a $20,000 bike while the camera crew was rolling? Not for us to decide. But if you’ve ever laid eyes on one of these Spacelanders, you know they’re pretty hard to miss.

“I know a little something about bikes,” said Chum. “And this is one of the coolest ever. I’ve never seen one in person, so I figured I would pull to the driveway and at least see if the dude was friendly.”

Well, the dude was friendly. He invited Chumlee over to check out the bike and explained that it was quite the conversation piece. He said it might be the only one in the state of Nevada, and considering one of these bad boys is in the Smithsonian, he’s probably not wrong.

Nothing Like a Brand New Bike at Christmastime

The story gets sweeter. Gregory received the Spacelander as a Christmas gift in 1960, and the bike hasn’t changed hands since. We know the Pawn Stars boys don’t consider sentimental value when making deals. But hey, if there was ever a time.

As it happens, Gregory was the one in the giving spirit. I think his exact words were, “I got a legal issue coming up, and I need some cash.” Alright, not exactly holiday cheer. Still, the point is Gregory was finally willing to part with the bike after more than 50 years.

Chumlee Negotiates Like He Belongs on ‘Pawn Stars’

Gregory wasn’t messing around. After Chum told him he represents a pawn shop, the owner threw a $20,000 figure at him. That may be market value, but it was way too rich for Chumlee’s blood. At least, that’s what he led Greg to believe.

Chumlee countered with $7,000. Greg was nearly offended, but he hung in there. He fired back with $12,000. Chum came back $8,500, then it was $9,000, and finally, the pair settled on $8,700. Pretty impressive negotiation from Chum, if we do say.

The Pawn Stars resident goofball knew the Spacelander was worth something. He just hoped Rick would see things the same way. In the end, Rick was highly impressed with the deal and even cut Chum a $1,000 bonus. Not a bad day’s work.
