The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, recently welcomed a daughter whom they named after the late Princess Diana.
On Sunday, the couple released a joint statement announcing their second child’s arrival. Their daughter, whom they named Lillibet Diana, was born Friday at the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, Calif. She was born at 11:40 am local time and weighed 7 lbs 11 oz.
Currently, both the baby and Markle are healthy and have since returned home. In the statement, the couple explained their reasoning behind their daughter’s name.
“Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet,” the statement said. “Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales.”
Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Celebrate Daughter’s Arrival
The couple already share a son, Archie, who turned two years old last month. In February, the pair announced Meghan was pregnant with their second child, months after Markle opened up about suffering a miscarriage in July.
In the November New York Times Op-Ed, Markle explained that “Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few.”
Additionally, their daughter shares her middle name with her cousin, Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, daughter of Prince William and Kate Middleton. She is also eighth in line to the throne, following Archie in the line of succession. She is also the Queen’s 11th great-grandchild.
The couple announced the sex of their second child during their intimate, tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey. During the interview that aired in March, Markle disclosed to Oprah that they didn’t have plans to have any more children.
“To have any child, any one or any two, would be amazing, but to have a boy and then a girl, what more can you ask for?” a proud Prince Harry said. “Now we’ve got our family. We’ve got the four of us and our two dogs, and it’s great.”
In a message of thanks on the couple’s website, they wrote: “On June 4, we were blessed with the arrival of our daughter, Lili. She is more than we could have ever imagined. We remain grateful for the love and prayers we’ve felt from across the globe.”
They added, “Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family.”
The two welcomed Archie in May 2019, before they stepped back from their roles as senior royals.
