Actor Sam Elliott makes no bones about what film brings a big, old smile to his face when he thinks of it all the time.
Elliott, in an interview with Sarasota Scene Magazine, talks about it.
“That’s a tough one,” he said when asked to pick his favorite films. “I’m going to say ‘Conagher’. It was Katharine [Ross] and I, and it was a labor of love.
“It was based on a Louis L’Amour novel,” Elliott said. “For a lot of personal reasons, that’s my favorite. It may not be the best film, but it’s one of my favorite experiences.”
Sam Elliott, Katherine Ross Make Movie Years After Getting Married
“Conagher” is a 1991 TV movie that features Sam Elliott as a cowboy facing some trouble crossing paths with a woman living nowhere in particular. Elliott and Ross, who gained film fame for her role in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” were married in 1984. They both had roles in the blockbuster film starring Robert Redford and Paul Newman. Ross’s role was bigger, while Elliott had a small role.
They wouldn’t cross paths again until 1978, started dating, and got married in 1984. Elliott and Ross live in Malibu, Calif., while he also has a ranch in the Willamette Valley in Oregon.
Now Sam Elliott loves him some western films. He really does and it doesn’t sit too well with the veteran actor that not many of them are being made these days.
“Hollywood’s forgotten about the western genre, and that’s unfortunate,” Sam Elliott said to AARP in 2015. “Cowboy movies are really hard work, but I’d love to do another one. I have a great simpatico for the Old West. We need to stay true to those old values.”
For a period of time, Elliott’s parents lived in the Great American Southwest. They were originally from El Paso, Texas and, according to Sam Elliott, his family lineage goes back to the Battle of San Jacinto.
Movie Actor Also Known For Prolific Work As Voiceover Artist
Oh, if you think you might have heard the voice of Sam Elliott on some of your favorite TV ads, then you’re not dreaming. Elliott has done voiceover work for companies like Dodge, Coors, and IBM. He also joined the cast of “Family Guy” in 2020 as Quahog’s new mayor Wild Wild West, who’s the cousin of late Mayor Adam West.
Sam Elliott also isn’t shy about his love of music. Two specific artists will make him stop and just about shed a tear. Those would be Johnny Cash and Ray Charles, according to an interview he gave to AARP The Magazine.
“I don’t often break down and boohoo, but I’ll shed a tear at the drop of a hat,” he said. “Something will just move me.”
It’s OK, Sam. You have a lot of fans who will join you in listening to Johnny and Ray sing their songs anytime at all.
