Sister Wives star Maddie Brown is speaking out about her family’s difficult choice to have her daughter’s foot amputated. She took to Instagram on Tuesday to share the story behind the decision.

Brown begins by addressing the questions that she regularly hears from those around her. “‘You cut her foot off?’ ‘If she was functional, why did you amputate?’ ‘Wait, where is her foot?’ ‘Was it really necessary to cut her foot off?'” she writes. “These are all questions I have received since Evie’s Surgery.”

The TLC channel star continued by sharing that she can “understand” why she receives these questions. “I understand the questions and at first glance, I would ask the same thing.”

Brown then explains that her daughter Evangalynn was born with her left Tibia bone “about a 1/3 shorter than her right.” While the difference didn’t appear “super noticeable,” Brown says that the difference in length could possibly cause her daughter more serious issues as she grows older.

She says that the family weighed several options hoping to make the best decision for Evangalynn. “Some families and people opt for a lengthening surgery, but Miss Evie’s difference was in the grey area of if that was even possible or not,” she writes. “With at least 4 major surgeries and the possibility of having to amputate in the end, we chose a Boyd amputation.”

Maddie Brown then reveals how hard it was to opt for the amputation procedure. “This was not a light-hearted decision, we spent the better part of the last year educating ourselves, talking to doctors, prosthetists, other families, and other amputees as we came to the decision we did,” she writes.

Brown concludes by explaining how she came to learn more about amputees in the effort to best care for her daughter. “Before Evie, I classified amputees as one category. You amputated because there was no way of saving the limb. I think that goes along with #limbdifference education. Sometimes it’s about quality of life. Due to this, I wanted to give a more in-depth explanation and answer all at once. I hope it will all bring awareness to a part of the #limbdifference world.”
